Hi all... I'm new to the site and to the world of handguns. I just picked up my new Springfield XD-9 Service Model yesterday. I spent most of the night reading the manual and learning to breaking in down.

I found this site by following a link in a member's profile from another board. Great resource and I'm glad I surfed in. I'd also like to say sorry for all the dumb newbie questions I'll probably be asking in the short term :banghead:

With my XD-9 in the gun safe, I'm already planning my next purchase. Walther P99 of Ruger GP-100 4"??

See you round the board...

Check out the hs2000talk.com forum. It is dedicated to the XD. They are great pistols.

Caper:

Thanks for the heads up on hs2000talk.com. I've actually been a member of that board for a couple of weeks. Another great resource!!

Regards...

Welcome Royale, and congratulations on your new purchase.

Considering that you just purchased an XD-9, (a service-pistol sized polymer framed semi-auto) I would probably not buy the P99 (another service-pistol sized polymer-framed semi-auto) just yet. The Ruger GP100 would be an excellent place to get your feet wet with a revolver.

Other than that I would recommend a nice .22lr pistol for cheap and fun plinking target practice. The Ruger 22/45 or the Browning Buckmark would serve well in this capacity.

I have an XD-9 myself and just recently bought a GP-100 3incher...I couldnt ask for two better guns. :)

Hey...

Looks like you're getting around Royale. Good to see.

I've always been a wheelgun fan myself (S&W mostly), though I have friends who swear by there GP100's.

A nice 4" .357 is a very versatle firearm, from mild to wild; depending on what ammo you stuff in the cylinder.

Thanks for the advice. A .357 revolver was always on my short list. When I was looking for my 9mm, however, I really liked both the XD-9 and P99. I bought the XD-9 over the P99 because of the grip safety feature. The P99 with the nickel slider is a real beauty and felt as good in my hand as the XD-9. I guess I'm hooked!! :)

Did you look at any other .357? What 3 incher? I've been looking at 4 inch .357s, but they are still a big platform.

Congrats on the XD-9, Royale! I've had my XD a little over a year and really like it. When I bought mine, it came with only the crappy 10 round mags and I had to get some hi-caps for it and it was ready to go! Now, I'm thinking about getting another one, my thinking being that a brace of XDs are better than one. Good shooting to you.

Welcome to the board. I just recently got the XD-9 and its a great pistol. I also have a P99 in 40s&w and a GP100. The P99 fits me well and is very accurate and reliable. But why not try a revolver? The Gp100 would be a good starting point, very sturdly and reliable. Feeds most any ammo; can use the .38 or .357, so more versatile.:)

Welcome!
My advice is buy whatever you like. Don't worry too much about what you "need". There is no reason you can have a dozen of the same type of pistol if that is what you want. It is nice to try out different types of pistols because that is the best way to see what you like best.

I got an XD-9 about 6 months ago and I am impressed with it. It feels SOOOOO much better than a Glock does in my hand. I can hold a Glock and shoot it but the XD just feels so much nicer that as long as it stay reliable, I have no use for a Glock. My XD is also really accurate.

I also like the Kahr K-9 so check one of those out if you like the XD, maybe we have the same hand print or something.

Royale -- Welcome! XD-9 seems like a great gun. I agree with the Ruger GP100 for a little diversity. Also be sure to save some $$ for a bunch of ammo to get out and become proficient with your weapon(s).

Safety...safety...safety - Learn and live the 4 rules and don't flaunt your great new purchase. There are a lot of idiots out there. Guns and the whole gun issue seem to separate the wheat from the chaff.

As I've said before and I will say many times again - $300 spent on a $250 .22 pistol and $50 worth of .22 ammo will make you a better shot with ANY pistol than 99% of the population.

I also recommend training, shooting and checking out some competitions. Shooting competitively is a ton of fun and a good way to meet some of the best folks in the world.
