Newbie wondering how long ammo prices stay high

To bad you cant stock up on gasoline.
With seasonal specification changes and long term storage issues exposed to oxygen via container "breathing", even in the size storage tanks used at petroleum refineries and storage terminals, it's not only undesirable but impractical to stockpile gasoline. The addition of ethanol to a large volume of retail gasoline sold in the USA brings additional problems with long term storage.

Prices have risen, but they aren't outlandishly high at the moment. You have to remember that we have just gone through a time of extremely low prices where manufacturers struggled to stay in business. What you really have to worry about is availability. Somewhat increased prices are unpleasant, but not compared to being unable to even buy the stuff. I suggest buying at least a basic supply and consider taking up reloading.

I'd love some links to these online sites that have "not overly high" prices.

I've scoured the web for the last month and just about every place is at least $100 higher (per 1k) than a couple months ago. In most cases it's much higher than that.

Hi all,

I've heard there were price hikes before but this is the first one that has occurred during my brief time shooting. Could some of you who have seen this before venture a guess as to how long ammo prices will remain this high?
At the very least prices will remain high and the stock will be less than normal until after the election.

I’ve done a few of these now, first starting in 1994, 2008, 2012-13, 2016 and now this one. Typically they revolve around legislation, this one revolves around a possible threat of internal unrest because of a pandemic as well as an election.

Depending on who’s elected in Nov and depending on if Covid 19 numbers lessen and there’s not food riots because of EBT cards not working or something of that nature it might go back to some semblance of normalcy.

I noticed the "sale" & "bulk" prices now are the same as regular prices were pre covid-19
I was going to order some bullets while the rebates are still going but everywhere I looked is having stock issues. I looked at RMR and they showed mostly out of stock.
I wonder how much longer we'll have this problem, reloading supplies and tools out of stock. I'm trying to help a friend start reloading and am having trouble finding the little things he needs, so far I'm just letting him use mine but eventually he needs his own.

If the present panic stretches to the beginning of election madness then it will last to November. If Trump looses there will be no end in sight. If Trump looses you’ll look back on today’s inflated prices as the good old days.

They're definitely not high right now. Just slightly elevated. Instead of getting new brass-cased 9mm for around .16 per round, it's now .17-.20 per round.

I believe we're at the end of salad days on inexpensive ammo. I have all I need, but for anyone who's short I would encourage you to acquire accordingly.

Similar to prices of gas... when there’s a shortage or a potential shortage the prices jump. Once everything else normalizes things tend to settle down a bit, but prices will slowly fall back to normal. It will not be the same drastic swing as when prices went up, and availability declined. Right now, ammo makers are running flat out though trying to meet demands. They will do less changeovers from caliber A to caliber B and they will not be idling lines due to saturated supply chains in caliber C. They run what sells fast and runs faster. 22lr, 9mm, 40sw, 45acp, .223/5.56, 7.62/.308, 7.62x39. Dont expect to find things like 357sig or FN5.7 on the shelf for a while once stock runs out. The good thing about expensive slow movers is that they are most likely to be in stock when a crunch comes.

My guess is that ammo prices will settle back to normal once people get used to the lifestyle changes in the coronavirus epidemic. These lifestyle changes are going to be with us until a vaccine is found, regardless of elections or attempts to "reopen" the economy.

Academy Sports prices on some 22 rimfire ammo is lower than it was four months ago when I ordered from them and some is still the same price. The trouble is most of it is out of stock right now. I roll my own centerfire and didn't check prices but I'm guessing they are holding the line on that too.

Yeah those are NOT decent prices. Same sites I've been checking for over a month.

IMHO it's all about luck. I bought some ammo from a online distributor but it was pure luck the price that I got. Hind site is 20/20 but now I wish I had bought 3-4 more units when I had the chance.

This market is crazy so it's all up in the air. Luck of the draw unless you have a hook.

FWIW I'm talking about bulk, 1k per.

Still waiting for links to online sellers with 9mm cartridges that are priced "normal" as so many in this thread are claiming............

First I'd seen anyone asking. In less than a minute of searching, here's .20/round 9mm for pickup from Academy. This is at the high end of the .17-.20 range I'd described above. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/wi...rfire-pistol-ammunition#repChildCatid=1454561

If the mods confirm that it's okay to post other gun forums, I'll glad post the source where I've been seeing other less expensive prices on ammo.

You can, just not in real bulk. We keep 50 gallons of 100% gasoline on hand all the time. Add a little stabilizer and it will last for years. We always use the oldest can first. At least we will keep the small engines running for a little while.

The link you provided shows nothing in stock the way I read it.

In high demand times, individual sellers whose prices are low aren't going to have inventory in stock for very long. Part of the reason I'm asking if it's kosher to link to other gun discussion sites is that the one I use has a stream of deals.

If you're relying on your local shop or being loyal to a particular retailer, indeed you'll only find high prices or OOS status. One needs to broaden their horizons and be a bit quicker if they want decent prices.

Here's .20 / round plus shipping. Eg, $.23/round for 500 shipped to TX. In stock as I'm posting now, no guarantees down the road. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/bl...erfire-ammunition#repChildCatid=6823005?73748

Six months after the shelves are full again. Prices will down if the virus death-contagius rate is stable and down.
