> i do feel that you should actually check facts rather than simply invent them.

I do feel you should ask me legitimate questions instead of accusing me. I did research the article and this fact has been clarified in the print edition, which was published a full three weeks ago. A shot from the original Soviet model could reach a range of 1,500 meter, though I’m sure it wouldn’t be accurate that far. My apologies for the misconstrued editing.

> were the cops really there to investigate a crime, or were they simply customers?

Yes, the cops were there to investigate a suspicious purchase. A young female came into the store earlier in the week, knowing nothing about guns, while two younger males waited in the car, and yet she knew exactly what she wanted. The gun shop owner felt uncomfortable with the purchase and asked them to come back later so she could think about it. I could not print, nor tell you, who alerted the ATF because family members and gang members have been known to retaliate on tattle tales, but the officers were there when the female came back, which is when I pulled up in the parking lot. When the story printed, the investigation into the straw purchase was still underway.

> are you implying by the article that ak-style weapons are too dangerous for private citizens?

No, my intention was to tell our readers this is a legal gun to buy. For gun owners and those in the gun community, this is obvious. For the general public, it is not and many of my readers have been surprised.

> what do you intend to do with it now?

I sold it back to the store, where it hangs on the wall with my autograph, “The Outlaw Josie Roberts,†next to my article.

> i … salute you for at least some measure of humility.

Thank you.

Almost reasonable.

I'm sure that she has been attacked right and left for her article. It does have a sensationalist aspect to it, like she was going for the Gonzo version more to shock than to inform...

Well, I feel remotely bad for having a good laugh at her expense and supporting her demonization. She seems half-way alright for a liberal. Oh well. I'm over it. :neener:

Don't feel bad. You are a strong advocate for your cause.

The article was a bit naiive and sensational, but then I guess I was a bit of a spaz when I bought my first gun, too...

I sent her a polite email and invited her over to the THR to find out that all "gun nuts" aren't ignorant hicks. I hope she comes over and has a tough enough skin to survive some of the ignorant hicks that will inevitably tell her, " i need my ak so i kin go pig huntin' wit my pa', 'n u kerry-luvin' lie-berals should go back to new york."

atek3,

I'm not a big fan of inviting non-gun folk to our forums. Lots of the language and lingo we use is easily misconstrued and is often used as fodder against us.

Like any subculture, we use shorthand phrases and tongue-in-cheek references that aren't easily understood by outsiders. There is a certain mindset to gun-folk. Would Sarah Brady understand someone someone into CAS casually mentioning that he was practicing draw and dry-fire in front of the TV during the Democratic National Convention? Or would such a comment elicit squeals of how we are practicing to kill off certain candidates? Go to her website and take a look. Comments that are pretty innocuous to you and me are seen as inflamatory and threatening to outsiders.

I look at it in the same way enlisted guys talk when they are alone, and how they talk when an officer strolls around the corner. Or how folks banter at work, but when the evil bean counters show up to grab a cup-a-joe, the conversation really mellows out.

Anyway, that is just my $.02, maybe she will learn something from us. I've sure learned a lot from you people so far... :)

jd, "Lots of the language and lingo we use is easily misconstrued and is often used as fodder against us." is not a bad point, but the strong antis won't be swayed by PC posting.

As to the language, you're aware of "Art's Grammaw", right? There's a reason for it. And I sometimes climb on my soapbox as to how you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Venting and ranting in any response to the writer of an article is definitely counter-productive. Same with bashing in posts here.

The purpose of this website is to promote RKBA. It does little good to preach to the choir. The more outsiders we can bring in, the better.

Bottom line? It's up to us to act like grownups. (One of these years, I might be able to do that. :D )

The point has still been missed that the original AK-47 was (and is) an automatic or select fire military weapon. The copy this young lady bought was a semi-automatic look-alike. She not only did not make that clear in her article, she actually (intentionally or accidently) conveyed the opposite:

article said:
The knock-offs look like AK-47s, fire like AK-47s and are very accurate at short distances. I said I’d take it.

In addition, her disclaimer about the range of the AK-47 is a bit disingenuous.
Except for a possible stray bullet in the chamber, I shouldn’t have been worried. In America, it’s legal to buy guns.

Even this one, a semiautomatic rifle developed for Soviets tank crews to kill from a mile away.

Here she states that the AK-47 was developed as a semi-automatic rifle ... again incorrect. But she clearly states that it was designed to kill from a mile away, which is false, and a far cry from her response saying that "A shot from the original Soviet model could reach a range of 1,500 meter, though I’m sure it wouldn’t be accurate that far. My apologies for the misconstrued editing."

I'm not willing to cut her much slack at all. She went looking for a sensationalist story, trying to show that anybody could buy an "assault weapon" over the counter. The proprietor of the gun shop sort of deflated her story a bit by making her play by the rules, but she still played out the story for every bit of sensationalism she could (quasi) honestly wring out of it.

I'm miffed. She hasn't answered my e-mail. I wonder if that's because she can't neatly refute the points I called her on.

little misse responded to my e-mail, but declined the invite to a shoot 30 miles east of her. apparently she has gotten a bunch of flak over this article, and i doubt she will write another like it.

funniest part is that she got fleeced in the deal. i told her i would help to put her in touch with a dealer who could receive this gun at 20$ over wholesale (189$), any time she wanted.
