Just thought I'd share some of the idiot quotes I saw in the comments below the article. These people really need to be educated.

However, when the constituion was written, people did not have access to hand held machine guns. No citizen has any business or right to have those. It's absurd.

this is ridiculous. i'm a gun owner. i don't own freakin' assault weapons. assault weapons have one purpose: to kill people. why are they legal? i don't care if red necks like them. ban them!

A) the liberal press wants to label any firearm the do not like an 'Assault weapon', this is simply for emotional affect.
B) true assault weapons (full auto or select fire) are already severely restricted in this country.

Are you kidding me "severely restricted"???? Come to Utah and see how easy it is. I can walk into my local gun shop and buy a semi-automatic machine gun with no background check. I just have to have a UT state ID that says I'm 18....severely restricted? Do your homework before you post more redneck bull$hit

I guarantee if when the constitution was written, if hand held machine guns were widely available, our founding fathers would have had enough sense to clarify the right to bear arms. You are obviously a red neck blinded by the NRA/Limbaugh types. As Americans we will ALWAYS have the right to bear arms, but as citizens we have no business owning semi/automatic machine guns.

The first step is to ban cruel and unhumane hunting. Then ban all firearms. If any person is found with a firearm put them in prison for decades.

How should we do that? Or are we collectively just going to use this as an opportunity to laugh at other people?

Wow...Some people need to learn to think before they speak. If he thinks that everyone is just going to give up thier firearm and go peacefully he has another thing coming.

I don't know about you guys, but if someone came into my house and tried to put me in prision for owning firearms I wouldn't go down without a fight.

"I can walk into my local gun shop and buy a semi-automatic machine gun with no background check."

How does that work again? Is that some type of gun thats more like two guns welded together, but with only one trigger? Wouldn't that still be regulated under the NFA?

I love how even though they have no idea what they're talking about, anyone that owns an 'Assault Weapon' is a redneck....

It seems to me that the problem is not whether or not to ban certain firearms. It seems to me that the problem is with rednecks. I dont have the statistics but I do know that rednecks are not responsible for a majority of the nations gun induced murders. The liberals wish to ban the guns that the rednecks like but they dont want to ban the guns that gang bangers like. If they are going to ban the SKS and AK47 becuase rednecks likem, then lets ban all highpoints and jennings arms because thats what the gang bangers use. In over five years on the force I have yet to confiscate a good quality name brand illegal firearm. They have all been rusty lint filled barrel junk.

I have yet to see anything in a comments section after an online news article, even Newsweek, that was worth reading.

The article itself was OK.

I get the feeling that the current administration is dropping these feelers to gauge public opinion on the matter. I cannot imagine a scenario where the Secretary of State would make a public statement in another country that wasn't previously vetted by the President, even SecState Billary.
