Hi all, it's another: "which gun should I buy?" thread.

I'm wanting a another .22lr pistol since my better half grew very fond of my SR22p.

I went to my local sportsman's wharehouse to window shop.

Guns that caught my eye were: Sig 1911- 22 OD, Browning 1911-22, Ruger Bearcat, or a second SR22.

I'm really interested in the two 1911 copies.

Big things I need to know:

1. Appetite: it's gotta eat cheap bulk.

2. Mags: how avliable are they? I'd prefer to buy from a store, as opposed to an online purchase.

3. Holster options: i'd like quality holster options avilable.

Whatever gun I choose will be added to my arsenal of "conversion tools".

I assume you would want to buy the holster local and not online also. I would ask first how important is that to you? If it is very important then I think the best move may be to go to your local stores and see what mags they carry and then narrow it down from there.

The Ruger bearcat will eat any ammo and you don't need mags so that may be a good look. They have a great reputation

I'm only concerned about Browning's 1911-22 Holster wise. it being %80 size and all.

And getting a holster online is fine with me. :D

Just a note on the sig 1911 it is the same gun as the GSG (German sport guns) the difference being the rollmakes and the grip scales have the sig logo on them. I have had no problem shooting federal and blazer bulk ammo from the GSG full size 1911,good trigger and accurate too. You will pay less for the GSG because it dosen't have the Sig name.check it out on you tube there some good info there.

I know this is not one you talked about, but love my Walther made Colt 1911. It has eaten everything I've fed it, from thunderbolts, CCI mini mags, superX and CCI velocitor, not a jam yet! I have 735rds though it to date. It also pretty accurate as well. As for holsters you can use any 1911 holster. I can get mag at one or two shops a round my place.

I bought a Browning, and had to buy magazines online. It's a fine little .22, and it's a bit small for my hands. The wife and grandkids love it. I haven't looked for a holster for it, as I doubt I'll ever carry it. I bought it for the grandkids to learn on and enjoy (and 'cuz I wanted it).

I also own a Kimber conversion that fits my Series 70 Colt, an Advantage Arms conversion for my G17, and a Ruger 22/45 MkII with a few VQ parts inside that will outshoot all the others.

Are you dead-set on a 1911 platform? If not there are a handful of other good .22LR pistols around. A friend just bought a S&W M&P-22 and let me tell you, it's a great pistol. He shot a half dozen different 22 rounds in it the first day and not one problem. I'm sure anyone with a centerfire M&P would appreciate that pistol even more since everything on it is in the same place as on the centerfire M&P pistols.

If you are set on the 1911 format I agree with the above, the Walther made Colt Government 1911-A1 in 22LR is a very good pistol without a doubt.

The SIG Mosquito is also an outstanding 22LR pistol all be it a little pricy. (but super high quality as with all the SIG handguns)

Not quite dead set, but I'm wanting a different style of pistol. Pretty stuck on 1911s for now, they just seem classy. :D who knows, i may want another pistol when decision time comes.

The suggestions definitley help though.

Conveniently, Browning also sells a version of the GI flap holster scaled down to fit their 1911-22, which really is a fun little gun.

You mention being fond of the 1911 format, that using 1911 leather would be a plus.
This Nelson Custom .22 upper fits standard 1991 leather, has readily available (inexpensive) magazines, shoots any ammo reliably and is quite accurate.
It is the updated Marvel design (dry fire permissible, locks back on empty mag) and fabricated by Mcmillan (barrel/stock maker).
Worth a consideration.
This on a beater RIA frame. It is available as iron sight version as well.

I love my Ruger bearcat. It instantly became my favorite 22 handgun the first time I shot it. Its a challenge to shoot well compared to my mark II target pistol, but the challenge is part of the fun.
Shoots anything, light weight, and with a set of Sack Petersen stags its sexy as hell.

Ruger Single Six. It will eat whatever cheap junk you feed it and smack its lips after.

Try one of these,,,

A Ruger MKII or 22/45 eats anything and shoots with rifle-like accuracy esp with a scope or red-dot. A nice leather holster with Ruger logo and spare mag pouch can be had for it also.

Unless you have pretty darn small hands I'd skip on the Browning 1911 and the Ruger Bearcat. I've got large size hands (large to Xlarge gloves fit me depending on the brand and use) and found both the small scale Browning and Bearcat difficult to hold well.

Far better to stick to the full size GSG/Sig or Ruger Single Six/Single Nine full size guns.

I would love to get one of those Browning M1911-.22's; just that they're so much money keeps me from getting one.

Last year I bought a GSG 1911-22 on another forum. It was well used but I felt for $200 what the heck. It mirrors the 1911 pattern very well except it's lighter. It fits all my 1911 holsters. I had planned to sell it but my daughter likes the lighter weight (she normally shoots a full size 1911-45). The pistol was reliable but not very accurate, and the sights had a very poor mounting system.

CW Accesssories in Ohio sells parts and pieces for the GSG/Sig and I had purchased some parts like the 15 round magazine adapter. Recently they came out with two new slides. I have never used a red dot on a pistol so I sprang for the new slide, plus a performance kit, and a Burris Fast Fire III red dot from Amazon. The slide and red dot work very well, but the performance kit was a very pleasant surprise. The targets on the left are before and the ones on the right are after the new parts and new slide and red dot. Shot from a rest at 10 yards using Blazer ammo.

The challenge of using the new red dot sights will keep me interested in this pistol for a while. If I can massage the trigger a bit it that will be a plus also.

I'm not associated with CW in any way except as a satisfied customer. Service and communication from them has been excellent and the products perform as advertised. The two new slides I mentioned, one takes an optic that mounts right on the slide the one shown, the other slide accepts standard 1911 target sights.

Bought a nice holster for my 1911-22 on Amazon.com. It's a size down USGI flap holster. The Browning is a nice but a little overpriced .22
