For my next NFA item that I wanted to build I was thinking about making AOW (a smooth bore pistol).
Has any one on here ever shot an encore AOW or a heavily sawed off NEF shot gun?
I was thinking of making the form 1 out for 12ga and 20ga with barrel lengths between 5 and 12 inches. I am not sure what the OAL would be.
I was thinking I could start with the 20ga barrel at 10 or 12 inches and adjust with a hack saw as needed, then if I can handle 20ga shells pick up a 12ga bbl. later on.
Now I have seen the encore pistol receivers for around $260, I have not seen any 12 or 20 gauge barrels for sale I am guessing there price is around $100 for a regular blued barrel and then another $200 for "taxes".
Does any one know the normal price for the standard 12 and 20ga shot gun barrels?

Some time ago I had a chance to fire an original Ithaca Auto Burglar. This was an Ithaca SxS with 12" barrels and a saw handle grip. I had a good grip on the barrels and good form leaning well into the shot. The thing still twisted out of my grip and stung my firing hand. Aftet the second barrel I declined to shoot it any more.

It was a 20 gauge.Ammo was 7/8 oz field loads.

At the time I owned and operated a Super Blackhawk 44 Maggie Numb and shot a friend's TC Contender Pistol in 30-30.

The Ithaca was much worse than either of those.

HTH....

I own a few short barreled shotguns. What you propose would be SBSs, not AOWs for tax purposes.

The Encore shotgun barrels are about $300, unfortunately. My favorite SBS is built on a Stoeger Uplander in 12ga, closely followed by a single shot Topper 58.

Recoil, as stated, is obscene. They're nothing but toys to me.

I'm no expert on the legal stuff, but if my understanding is correct you have to BUY an AOW, not build it (unless you are a firearms manufacturer). An AOW has to be built that way from the beginning and cannot be altered from a long gun, otherwise it is a SBS and has to be papered (and taxed) as such.

Homework time...

I have an Encore pistol registered as an AOW with a 12.5" 28 gauge barrel:

Because of the location of the screws attaching the ventilated rib to the barrel, and the location of the screw attaching the forend to the barrel, you will want to cut the barrel at the 12.5" mark. The overall length will be about 16-7/8".

You should try to find a local type 07 FFL / class 2 SOT. He can register your Encore pistol tax-free on a Form 2, engrave it with his name and location, and transfer it back to you for $5 on a Form 4. He will want some money for his troubles of course, but probably much less than $195.

They run $300+ new:

and then another $200 for "taxes".
See above.

All right then where did you get the 28ga barrel, have not found any of those for sale by encore. Is it after market?
$260, I guess they must have been "used".
If I can find a SOT I will do that.

They are $295 from eabco.com.

If you decide to go with a 28 gauge, keep in mind that nobody sells slug or buckshot loads, so you will need to roll your own if you want them.

I've been looking for a used 20 gauge barrel, but they seem to hold their value pretty well. $260 is about right for a new pistol frame though.

Yea I have a 28ga I know it doesn't have buck or slug loads but its hell on doves for some reason.
That is a cool TC site, they have every thing but 20.
How use full is that AOW28 you have?
