I had a $300 gift card that I needed to spend on something before it expired. I found a Taurus GX4 online for $249, and Taurus has a $50 mail-in rebate between March and June. With tax and shipping it was $299 total. My FFL decided not to charge me this time, so it will be $249 OTD on the pistol when I get the rebate check.

I'm not a fan of Taurus semiautos (their revolvers and Beretta clones are generally okay). I'm not a fan of polymer striker pistols in general, even though I have a bunch that function properly that I can shoot okay. I'm not a fan of semiauto carry pistols if I can carry a revolver instead.

But the G43 and LCP9s pro that I don't carry are starting to look pretty outdated. After the P365 came out, those things were immediately obsolete. If I'm going to have a small 9mm pistol to not carry, I want it to be thoroughly modern. No more of those tiny six-round mags for me.

The GX4 came in a "meh" plastic case with two 10-round magazines and nothing else of interest. I cleaned and lubed it after I picked it up. It takes down by turning a big slot 1/4 turn with a screwdriver instead of the usual "line it up and push the side release out". Needing a screwdriver is not my preference, but I don't have to field strip in the trenches during WW1, so NBD. The barrel was dirty and the rails were bone dry. The rails are nice and long. The mags are Mec-Gar. The barrel and chamber and slide look smooth and nice as far as the machining goes. The finish on the slide was thoughtfully pre-scratched.

Ergonomics for someone with XXL hands were okay. (Keep in mind I can cover the whole thing with my hand and have hand left over.) I could only seem to get my pinky on a small corner of the grip. The trigger seemed fine. The sights were okay. The texturing is a little rougher than I like, but okay. The mag release was easy. The tiny slide release required pulling back on the slide a little. It came with a bigger palm swell piece, so I installed it.

When I shot it today the ergonomics were a little different. I can cram my hand higher on the grip than I thought and get most of my pinky on it. The mag release is so close to the slide release on a pistol this small that I have to hold my thumb just so or I will foul one of them. If I pull the trigger normally it will pinch my finger every time. I found a mildly unnatural finger position that allows me to shoot it without getting pinched. The slide release is like any other tiny slide release. The sights are fine and IDC about the texturing.

I slipped a little bit slingshotting it once and the first round failed to feed. I hit the mag release three different times without meaning to and it didn't fire (I guess it has a mag safety?). It had no malfunctions that I didn't cause directly.

I fired about 50 rounds through it, in between other pistols. Shooting groups of five, the first couple were pretty good, but I needed to get my trigger finger lined up better or I would have started flinching. After I got my finger and thumb situated properly, the pistol shot fine. Most of my groups of five would have all hit an orange at seven yards. I can already shoot it pretty well for a pistol its size, and should improve with practice.

I probably prefer the GX4 to my G43. It fits my hand a little better. The trigger is still a "sproingy" striker trigger, but it's shorter and lighter than the Glock trigger. The Glock does have slightly better sights, but the ones on the GX4 are fine - they just lack the white outline I like. It holds four more rounds. That's not a big deal to me, but it's something.

Next time I'll go with a friend and we'll shoot the Taurus back-to-back-to-back with the Glock and Ruger. I'm pretty sure I'll like the Taurus the best of the three. That's fine. I'm still going to prefer to carry a 38 snub anyway, but at least the micro 9mm that I'm not carrying will be thoroughly modern - small and light and high capacity. :)

I'll post a (boring) photo after I get it clean. I added a spectacular scratch of my own to complement the one provided by the factory. The pistol seems okay as a shooter, but I'm suspecting the finish might not be the absolute best.

Nice personal review of the pistol. Your experience brings out the need for mechanical reliability as a starting point, and a good fit between tool and operator. The GX4s and recent predecessors seem to have a good reputation, brand aside, and that's a good price for a reliable small 9mm. Enjoy it in good health.

Not trying to claim revolvers are "better than semiautos". I've just been shooting them for so long that they're more natural for me and I shoot them slightly more accurately. The GX4 is pretty much the exact same size as my S&W 642. I'd normally carry the 642 instead because my first shot would be quicker and more accurate due to my muscle memory, not because it's "better".

I haven't shot or really even handled the P365, Hellcat, or any of the others. I don't know if the GX4 is particularly better or worse. It's roughly the same size and holds roughly the same amount of 9mm. It seems adequate to me. If the gun doesn't mess up after a couple of more range trips and I get good at keeping my thumb in the right place, I would consider it okay for SD.

I ordered a pinky extension to put on one of the two mags. That might make it comfier to shoot.

Does anyone have a holster they particularly like for these pistols? I have two that will hold it, but I'd rather have one that's a better fit.

Would a case rim or coin turn the take down release? Some of them are designed that way so don't "need" a screwdriver in a pinch.

No. In fact, the turning slot is in a slight recess like they wanted to make sure you couldn't turn it with a dime or something.

I have screwdrivers in my range bag and at home, so NBD. If I ever have to field strip it in a life-or-death situation, with no tools and bullets flying all around me, I hope to die bravely and bring honor to my house. ;)

I have shot the GX4 with the larger backstrap and it’s the best fitting “micro subcompact 9mm noisy cricket” I have held and shot. Still like the OP, I’m really back to snubbies for carry. Mostly due to being able to have a better fitting handgun in my hands. Nothing fits my hands like a snubbie.

I got a Harry's Holsters IWB for mine, it's great.
I have a CT soft back IWB for a G43 that's not bad, and a cheap one for the Gx4 similar to the ones Taurus has on their site. Pic below:

The LGS owner is a friendly acquaintance. Some years ago we discovered that some of our ancestors knew each other personally and served in the military together. He said that he liked the GX4's a lot, bought three of them, and they took forever to sell. They seem like decent pistols to him and he's surprised that they aren't more popular.

I cleaned it again yesterday and am still pleased with the machining. Everything fits well and there was no unusual wear or metal shavings after its first range trip. Looking at the finish closely, it came with a couple of flaws as well as a scratch.

If it continues to go bang every time, which I believe it will, I'll consider it a success. It's a lot of pistol for the money, especially with the rebate, and it could theoretically become my new "travel nine" for road trips. Thank you for all of the kind comments.

I'm glad you found the right micro-9 for you not to carry.

I get it. I like to have comparable autos and revolvers for carry. However, I shoot both well, and like both, so I actually carry both. Still, I get it. Even if you plan to carry the revolver 100% of the time, it is nice to have an alternative if you ever want it. I have two pocket pistols (a Kel-tec Pf9 and a Ruger LCP) even though I doubt I'll ever actually need something smaller or lighter than my 442 or P365 (both of which pocket quite well).

The Gx4 is probably the only current Taurus auto that interests me right now (the G3c used to, but with my P365 and Glock 19, I don't see the need for a traditional subcompact, so much so I just sold my 1st gen S&W M&P40c). If I see an old PT908, PT911 or PT940 at a reasonable price (and with enough mags since I'd likely never find mags) I may have to jump on it though.

Here’s mine:

I think most of blackhawk stuff is cheesy and worthless, but the ‘stache’ for a glock 48 fits it like a glove, and actually works great as a holster.

Have one on its way, I had something else I already planned to buy and figured since I was going to do a transfer and Taurus has the $50 rebate and these Dingle stacks (Double + Single) are all the rage now I wanted to give one a try. Taurus being a brand I've not had issues with their new production guns, the good prices, and the Gx4 being the cheapest Dingle stack made it all come together.

I get the feeling that the single stacks like the Ruger LC9 and Kahr CM9 that were all the rage before the P365 came out are significantly slimmer compared to the Dingle stacks, probably more comfortable to carry, maybe to shoot, but the entire drive behind the Dingle stacks is capacity.

If I do find that to be the case, I am going to be sorely disappointed in the firearms community that they're trading better carrying, possibly better shooting pistols solely to add a few extra rounds to a magazine.

It does seem every video I've seen lately of handgun self defense, by LE and non-LE, they always result in a mag dump. In every one, the last 3 to 5 shots made no difference in the stopping of a threat because the threat was already stopped at that point.

I honestly purchased my first GX4 when they first rolled out .. my first double stack striker fired micro nine .. I shot it quite a bit … really like it .. enough to pick the GX4 XL over a SIG P365 XL and a Hellcat Pro …
We are now watching the micro nines getting bigger .. 15 to 17 rd capacity ..increasing in weight
Basically becoming thin Glock 26’s and thin 19’s

The GX4XL TORO is a solid choice..11+1 or 13+1
capicity .. light .. well constructed.. extremely tight slide to frame fit ..

TY. Yeah, you get it. I prefer to carry revolvers, but occasionally a semiauto might be a better choice. I have at least one carryable semiauto in each of the normal calibers, just in case. (And they're also interesting to shoot.)

I have 22's and 25's and 32's autos that I don't carry because of the caliber. I have 9mm, 40S&W, and 45acp autos that I don't carry because I have revolvers in the same calibers (true story) and I shoot them better. I do occasionally carry a tiny 380 because there really isn't a revolver equivalent - though I do hope to run across a 380 revolver to purchase one day. :)

"Taurus makes one." I have yet to see their 380 revolver in person. If I see one for a decent price and it seems okay, I'll probably buy it. Just to "finish my collection".

Thanks for the hint on the charm bracelet screwdriver. It was just sitting there. :)
