Stopped in to a nice old time country gun store here the other day and found a handsome riot gun sitting on the rack. Turned out to be a late 60’s Mossberg M500A 12-gauge 18.5” barrel. Price on the sticker was low. Struck up a conversation and got it lower. It followed me home.

Condition seems barely used and it’s got some nice early Mossberg features such as a handsome figured walnut forend and stock with red rubber buttpad and white line spacer, single action bar, white bead front sight, stepped steel safety, and factory engraved polished bolt and lifter. You don’t see the new Mossbergs with such attention to detail and finish.

The slide is smooth and the gun functions great. I even got a good size grey squirrel with it yesterday. I plan to add a light mount, sling, and velcro side saddle and to make it as my dedicated home defense shotgun.

Great deals are still out there. Take care all.

I slept on one just like this a while back, $200. In great condition. I believe it was a 500AB Riot gun though, had dual action bars, original heat shield I believe and nice wood, jeweled bolt, etc... for $200 I don't know why I didn't just grab it. I don't know how many shotguns I really need, probably 2 or 3 more than I already have tbh and I have a 500A

I'm always having an internal argument with myself when I see something I "want". I can never justify the need, probably why I buy so few guns lately. I used to buy anything and everything if it was a deal

Nice score.

I have always like Mossberg 500 shotguns. I caught some flack for using one for waterfowl hunting when others were using fancier and more expensive shotguns. But at the end of the day, I still shot my limit with the same amount of shells as the other guys. My 12 gauge 500 is still setup for hunting while the 410 500 is setup for HD use with an 18" cylinder bore barrel. I picked up the 12 gauge about 12 years ago for $275 from a guy in town. It has the compensated vent ribbed barrel.

Ven as an 870 lover I'd have jumped on that one. I'm still watching for one of the kind of rare 500 trap models, just to cause the K, P, and B gun guys some discofort.
