Just wanted to share a great experience with Mossberg. I recently bought a used Mossberg .410 model 500E. It was made in 1990 but looks like it could be brand new. It came with a 28” bbl. Well, I had thought it might be nice to have an 18.5”bbl and make it a nice HD shotgun for wifey.
I was tempted but decided not to cut down such a pristine barrel, so I decided to get a second. I looked high and low. Called three LGS’s, a local gunsmith, Numrich, nobody had one. I think I could get a new one on either Midway or Brownells, but it was going to cost $170 or so. That’s more than I paid for the gun. Well as a last resort, I called up Mossberg CS.
I asked if they “happen to have any barrels around” and gave them a description of what I was looking for. I was told they don’t keep .410 barrels in stock because it’s a relatively low demand item, but they make them to order. So I work up my courage, and ask how much it would cost to do such a thing. The guy answers “$66.00 and we can have it delivered in 3-4 weeks.” Whoa.
I jumped all over it, and I have an 18.5” bbl, smooth bore, plain bead inbound in a few weeks. The guy could not have been more pleasant, and at $66 for a new barrel, I would have been a fool NOT to go for it. I’d bet someone selling to me used would have charged as much. Just wanted to share a story of good CS and a company that not only stand behind it’s products, but is going out of its way to build a support component for a guy who bought his shotgun on the used rack.
Ever since last month's score on a really nice 500ATP, I was already getting hot and bothered over Mossberg, but Mossberg earned itself a very loyal customer today.
Edit to add:
Sorry for typo of "mossberg" spelling in the title. Mods please feel free to correct should you see fit.
