I just acquired an AWA nickel-plated .45 Colt Peacekeeper that has a perfect surface except for the hammer that shows some scuffing on each side from its normal in-and-out action. Any suggestions on how to remove the scuffing without harming the nickel plating and/or keeping it from reoccurring? Thanks.

Depending on how bad the scuffing is, you may be able to polish it out with automotive chrome polish. But it will come right back if you continue to use the gun. The only other solution would be expensive, and probably not worth the time and trouble, but anyway.

1. Have the plating stripped off of the hammer.

2. Then a gunsmith with a surface grinder could take about .003" off of the side (or both sides) of the hammer where it isn't covered by the frame, above the screw hole. The clearance would prevent future scuffing.

3. Then have the hammer replated.

I doubt you could do Fuff's program for the price of the gun.
If you don't want your guns to show wear, don't shoot them. At one time Colt Custom Shop was sending out SAAs with the hammer strapped down and a note that shooting or even cocking them would reduce their collectors' value. Phooey.

I agree, and said as much in my preceeding post. But rico wanted suggestions, and that's what we're here for... :)
