Thought I should put this out there to see what others think.

Problem: Rem 870 express new won't eject spent shells.

Well, I tried polishing the barrel with steal wool per your suggestion. I've followed the manual pretty closely, like you told me. Only 12% of my 100 shots today ejected properly. I became so distracted by my gun that I stopped keeping track of my hits.

Ammo Tried: (all 2-3/4", #8)
Cheap Federal x1
Cheap Rem x2
Quality Rem STS x1

Though the STS worked best, only 20% properly ejected. Tried my first shot at skeet with the different positions. Tough but fun. It was during the skeet game that I stopped loading two rounds and proceeded with single shots at the remaining stations. With two rounds, the ejector would pull up and pluck out the #2 unspent shell leaving the 1st spent shell jammed in the chamber. This was so frustrating. I'll go back to see if I missed anything in the manual. Then I'm taking it back to Atlantic guns. I have a feeling they're going to tell me to contact Remington. Ok, I'm off to clean...

I've heard of this problem alot lately. Best bet is to call Remington before tinkering with it, as well as the store you bought it at. As far as im concerned those 870 are not what they use to be, and it sounds like the QC dept there is slipping up alot lately.

What's going on with REMINGTON's quality?

I'm about to buy a shotgun and IT WILL NOT BE A REMINGTON!
I shouldn't be forced to buy a WINGMASTER (new) if its over my budget. :banghead:

I know there are millions out there and most of you swear by them, but it seems those are models other than the EXPRESS, which is very affordable for most.

I hope Remington is paying attention to these forums, that company is too famous and respected to ignore this type of problem.

I don't think its possible for the 870 to be cost competitive with its newer rivals and Chinese clones and still be of consistently good quality. The basic design is getting too expensive to manufacture in the U.S. to make a decent budget gun IMO.

I hate to say -----BUT----------I think these days you are better off buying a Chinese 870 clone than a real Remington built one.

:(

I have bought two late-production 870 Expresses in recent weeks, for various projects. Each has had at least 200rds thru 'em and so far not one has failed to operate exactly as it should. Sadly, that doesn't help the OP at all.

So let's keep this focused on the OP and not on whatever brand bashing we want to express (no pun intended).

Check the ejector and make sure it isn't loose(two rivets) the tip isn't broken or the ejector spring isn't missing/broken,take the barrel off, makes it easier to inspect. Is the barrel on nice and snug,or have some slop?Make sure its a 12 gauge ejector, marked with a 12 on the extractor tip near the chamber end.
Is extraction hard or smooth??
Could be several other things like a firing pin retaining pin, damaged or defective action bars.Rough chamber, chamber rim seat deformed.
Get in there with a good light and try to see what the action is doing with a dummy round/snap cap.
If you cant find anything give Remington a shout and return it for repair.

If it's popping off the rim of the shell, I would look at the extractor. Generally, when people have extraction issues with 870s, Mossbergs, and Benellis, et al, the accepted procedure I have observed is to beat them on the ground to force them to eject. If the extractor generally slipped off the rim this would be fruitless in all cases.
If I bought any gun new and had a problem, I'd probably let the manufacturer fix it, but I have fixed way more than my share over the years. If you don't know what you are doing, don't bugger it up and then whine when the manufacturer won't still bail you out.
Expresses are NOT the only cheap guns that have occasional issues. They just sell more apparently to computer literate people who post every issue on the net, and they have decent customer service if you do get an issue. I can think of a few others who are famous for their BAD customer service.

I had the same thinf happen to my 870 tactical, i took it back to the store i got it from. It was a new firearm so remington fixed it for free. The message i got from remington was "over sized bore" thats all they said

You need a new barrel

Please trust me on this, I've gone to multiple gun smiths, and a trip back to Remington to find out that some Express barrels are out of spec. You can polish the hell out of it and it won't work, you need a new barrel.

If you call Customer Service, they will not give you a hard time about this. I had mine sent free overnight.
