I had an interesting conversation a couple days ago with a gun shop owner. He said there seems to be a trend in his shop that the Iraq vets get a delay from NICS when trying to purchase a firearm.

While anyone can speculate what that means, what I want to know is wether others have noticed anything in this regard ? If you are a vet who has been delayed, or a gun shop owner who deals with this issue, sound off if you feel there is any varification to this information I have been given.

They didn't delay me and I got back a little more than a week ago and bought a new M39 sniper less than a week ago.

I'm a Iraq vet who is 100% disabled by the VA. Part back/neck injury and part PTSD from OIF2 (04-05). I've never had any delay in gun purchace before I got my CCW a year ago. Now with my CCW no NICS check is needed.

I'm retired from the Coast Guard/Navy and I was delayed for two of the four guns I've bought in the last year. Both were long guns, oddly enough. The handguns went right through.

The first time, the salesman at the shop suggested that it might be due to the fact I'd held a clearance while I was in, although he didn't know why that would be a delaying factor, and it makes no sense to me.

Karma, I do know of two people who were delayed because of FBI security background checks. They were in the process and NICS flagged them over an active investigation. Took two days for it to clear.

Doesn't sound like there is a problem . At least not anything close to being a wide spread or often occuring event.

I've heard that if you have any sort of active security clearance it can cause a "flag" to come up on NICS because NICS indicates there is a file on you in some database somwhere. The NICS operators don't have access to *what* the file is, so the "delay" is given and the NICS check is sent up one level where they can actually verify the info.

This makes sense, to a degree, but doesn't explain why some people with active security clearances seem to get delays and other's dont.

I don't know how true this is. This is just the explanation I've heard about in the past.

Yeah, but I retired in 2002, and I don't think my clearance had been active for years, at that time. Definitely not 'in process'.

It's entirely possible that my two delays were unrelated to my former security clearance. I have no idea what caused it. It'll be interesting to see if I continue to get flagged, and only on long guns.

Karma, this is the government you are talking about. Surely you see the error in the above statement:neener:

I'm in the process of renewing my security clearance and have had no problems with the 3 guns that I have bought over the last 4 months.

edit: I'm not an Iraq vet either, but treatment for PTSD is not the same as adjudication.

I've had no problems. I suppose there might be an issue with a particular
gun shop or individual. However, the guy behind the gun counter will likely
be the last person to know what's really going on.

I've bought quite a few guns while on active, and after getting out. Out of dozens and dozens of guns I've only been delayed maybe twice.

So far as I've experienced, security clearance and Iraq deployments didn't seem to effect my NICSing. I think I bought a Mauser or two while my clearance was actually being investigated, don't recall any hold-ups then either.

Iraq vet, security clearance -- plenty of NICS checks both on active duty and retired -- never a hold up.

No delay for me either. I was in the Army and am now considered a "war-time veteran" even though I never saw combat. I guess we are "at war" since September 2001 even though war was not declared by Congress, but that is a discussion for another time and place.

I dunno about that.. I've had a clearance for nearly a decade and never had an issue buying a gun.

I bought two handguns while I was home on leave directly from Iraq. I also had a security clearance being processed at the time (investigation closed, but not adjudicated). Both times the NCIS check cleared and I walked out with the pistol.

I dont think it has much to do with vets, but everyone in general. One shop owner said he was seeing them delay about 60% of his customers.
