I'm thinking of putting some sort of night sight(s) on my S&W 10, 36 and/or 686. At least a front night sight, such as tritium. I don't want to spend a fortune, but would like to upgrade the low-level light capability for self-defense. Any thoughts?

Anybody have any experience with XS Sights?

Thanks,

Yes, I have several rifles with their sights on them. Quality is the best. Very rugged and effective sights. Get one of the front sights. That's all you need, since at handgun fighting distances, if you put the front sight on the center of mass and fire, you will hit the center of mass, assuming you use proper shooting form.

TR Hawkeye,

Thanks. Possible Stupid Question Alert: how do you sight-in after installing them?

On a fixed sighted revolver, you do not sight in. The rear sight is a groove in the top strap of the frame, and the front sight is pinned in. The sighting in was done, in effect, at the factory when they screwed the barrel in so that the front sight lined up with the rear sight groove. So long as it is sighted in now, it will be sighted in when you replace the front sight.

Just had Meprolights put on my 686 2.5" (and an action job too). I love 'em.

MyRoad, did they simply replace the sight blade, or did they replace the entire rear sight? Do you have the part number, cost, etc? Thanks a lot for any help!!!

They replaced the sight blade, but as I understand it, it was a bit tricky and some minor modification needed to be done. I bought the sights, and then had a local 'smith mount them.

I got them at Midway.com (product# 573093) for around $80, the site says they only have two left...

That is awesome info! Does anyone have a phone number for Meprolight? All I can find on the website is the number for Israel. Thanks!!!

Contact Kimber, they are the exclusive dealer in the US for Meprolight.

Kimber is the exclusive importer/distributor, but like their guns, I don't belive they actually sell Meprolight night sights to the public directly (I don't see an option to buy them directly from their website, for instance). As I mentioned in my previous post, I got mine from Midway.

You can get them lot's of places, Natchez, Brownell's, and Cheaper Than Dirt, to name a few.

I went with Midway because they had them in stock, and I've had good exeriences working with them in the past (Natchez is great too, but they were out of the ones for 686's).

good luck to you -

The reason I am trying to contact someone in direct sales is that I only need the rear blade. The 686PC I'm getting already has a front night sight, and the front shown at the link you posted isn't a dovetail (which the 686PC is). Thanks for the info, and hopefully I'll be able to find what I need.

Gotcha. In that case I'd agree, start with Kimber's website and you'll be able to track down your info.

They are traditionally sold in sets, so if they won't break a package for you, there are folks who seem to like only having the front sight be a night sight... so you might be able to sell off the front sight after you mount the rear one. Just a thought.

I thought of that too. I'm not really opposed to have a front only, but if I can buy the rear by itself I would certainly consider it. Thanks again!

MyRoad, I really like those sights. It's a shame that they cant just be ordered and taken somewhere local to put on. I got a S&W 625 Mtn Gun that would love a set of those night sights. ;)

While any local gunsmith can easily install them for you, that's a moot point, because as I look at the package mine came in it has a sticker right on the front that says "Not meant for Mountain Guns" -- no kidding.

Meprolight has two models, one for red ramped front sight blades, and one like yours, which is a whole new front blade. One of them did say, as you mentioned, that it wasn't meant for Mth Guns.

I wish I knew why that wouldn't fit a Mtn Gun!

It FITS the Mtn gun, but...

....won't stay in there, as it's meant to be loc-tighted in, and the Mtn Gun barrel is prone to SERIOUS heat, and the sight comes out.
