Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Looking for a QUALITY nipple wrench for Pietta 1860 and 1851 cylinders. The last 4 I purchased were junk and brokem during nipple removal. The nipples have been removed on prior cleanings and replaced using monkey grease. thanks

When I bought my first Pietta from Cabela, I opted for the starter kit also. The nipple wrench that was included, I've been using for 4 years, and have no problems. I've seen this wrench by itself at the store, and in their catalog. Also, check with Track of The Wolf, and Dixie Gunworks.

Breaking 4 nipple wrenches suggests you need to look at how tightly you're installing them. I don't know what 'monkey' grease is - T/C sells an excellent anti-seize grease called Gorilla Grease that works very well for me.

There are two kinds of nipple wrenches, those that have been hardened and those that have not. Hardened wrenches usually cost 2 to 3 times as much as their soft cousins, and often that's the only way you can identify them, as the sutler's don't always put that in their product descriptions.

You can also harden the end of the wrench yourself with Kasenite, if you're familiar with that.

However, in the long run you probably should look into Gorilla Grease and using a bit less torque.

Common sense would tell you not to over tighten the nipples or for that mater all the screws on your on your revolver. But that did not stop me from doing it i also had to learn the same way you did. :banghead:

I stand corrected it was Gorilla grease not Monkey grease. I took your advise and ordered a nipple wrench from Dixie gun works, it arrived a couple of days ago. I removed the nipples from 6 cylinders with no problems. The quality of this wrench is superior to the ones mfg. by Traditions. Thanks again.
