Not sure about NJ but if you can have in Ca, it would be safe to say NJ ok but check. A while back we got 2 Saigas one in 223 and one .308 Converted both moved the trigger forward pistol grip adj stock milled forend and yes a
F$%#$%^ bullet button but I cant say enough good things about em except it dings up the brass pretty bad just ordered a buffer if that fixes the brass boggerin its a near perfect rifle at 100yds we are at 1'' groups both have 21'' barrels and scopes that cost more then the gun.
Good luck

Due to NJ's substantially identical clause, a cali-style bullet button does not help with legality.

As far as NJ legal "AKs" simply read the wording of Title 13 Chapter 54.

Simply put:
Detachable mag and pistol grip?

If so:
Doesn't say AK, Avtomat Kalashnikov, kalashnikov, or AK-47/74 anywhere on it?
Doesn't have a folding or telescoping stock?
Doesn't have a bayonet lug?
Doesn't have a grenade launcher?
Doesn't have exposed threads and/or a flash supressor?
Magazine holds 15 or less?

Then it's legal to own. Look at MAK-90, WASR, Saiga.

Also, if you are just getting into scary black rifles and live in NJ, I strongly advise you to read Title 13 Chapter 54 in its entirety and apply what is written there as strictly as possible. When in doubt of something's legality, assume it is illegal in NJ.

After all, all guns and ammunition are illegal to own, carry, or dispose of in NJ unless otherwise provided exception by law. And the courts have rule that "When dealing with guns, the citizen acts at his peril" and there are many nuances in NJ law you probably have never even heard of.

You run brass through an AK?

No really, though, dinging the brass is not a bug, it's a feature. The rifle is meant to eject as violently as possible to prevent failure to cycle. Reloading ammunition was not a concern to the designers of the weapon as it was intended for piles of low grade steel cased ammo.
