Sent today to the Philly Inquirer, in response to Bryan Miller's letter. An irony that it happens today, on Bill Of Rights day in New Jersey.

Projection vs. Patriotism

Once again, the Executive Director of Ceasefire NJ has twisted reality by labeling gun owners as “false patriots” and implying our objections are based strictly on emotion.

Of all people, Miller should know about psychology. Ceasefire’s entire campaign has always been one based on emotion ginned up by (permit me to be generous) misleading statements to promulgate their extremist ideology.

For example, even a basic comprehension of the Lawful Commerce in Firearms Act would expose Miller for the huckster that he is. And you’ll never hear him acknowledge the government’s own study that shows no clear benefit to 40 years of gun control, nor the 36+ states whose violent and property crime rates went down due to Right-To-Carry laws.

His other delusions are equally dangerous. But Miller is less concerned with truth than with keeping the ‘gravy train” rolling. Truth pales in the face of financial donations and political influence.

Now, here Miller is again implying that gun owners are emotionally retarded, one more self-fulfilling prophecy in the extremist’s playbook. I’d acquaint him with a term in the Psychologist's parlance: “Projection”. Another word that fits is: ‘hypocrisy’.

What’s more patriotic than protecting the absolute, inviolate rights to defend ourselves with the most effective life support tool ever devised – a handgun? Surely, if you’re delusional and so twisted around your own rhetoric, you’d never comprehend that police are law enforcement, not crime prevention.

Yes; we’re Patriots first and foremost who cherish all of our Bill Of Rights, not those which are picked and chosen for us, falling like so many crumbs off the Liberal elitists’ table that they’d deign to grant us. We even defend the right for Miller to shoot his mouth off, though he misrepresents facts (synonym: 'lying') on just about every point he tries to make.

Emotional? Maybe. I’m exasperated by pontificators who would deny us our absolute rights while demanding the ones for themselves that suit them best.

Original Letter from Miller:
Letters | Gun advocates fueled by irrational emotion

Thanks to Lawrence Braico of the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs ("Gun law's flaws," Dec. 5) for finally clarifying why pro-gunners are so vehement in opposition to limits on packing heat at will.

Gun-lobby rhetoric is awash in false patriotism and incorrect reading of constitutional principle, and Braico didn't spare us either. But in his rambling and parental letter taking Gov. Rendell to task for signing legislation enabling law enforcement to remove guns from domestic abusers, Braico defined what really motivates pro-gunners to fight against every limit on gun possession or use: emotion.

He wrote that emotion was key to "how much said firearms are valued" by their owners. So now we know. It's less about so-called rights, and more about the emotional attraction pro-gunners feel toward guns.

That would explain the irrationality in opposing, as Braico's organization did, requiring that handguns be childproofed in the future so kids can't unintentionally (or intentionally) fire them. And it would explain why it wants anyone to be able to carry concealed handguns in public.
What is really telling is how Braico makes clear that he and his ilk value guns over people, as his ire is directed not at gun-toting abusers who put women and children at risk, but at Rendell for signing legislation to protect those innocents.

Am I emotionally attached the th large number of guns I own?? NO. It's not emotion to me. I finally obtained my Permit to Carry and do so more often than not. It seems fairly simple, fairly obvious and fairly cliché to me. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Criminals simply do NOT abide by the rules and laws established by our forefathers, instead, they abide by the law of the jungle. I'd prefer to be on at least an even footing with these criminals. Practice makes me better than them. How many of them go to a range and practice bullet placement, etc ?? I'm sure a few do, but more often than not, very few get to a range. Can I outgun a criminal, probably. I hope I NEVER have to find out.

Finally, I'm an ardent supporter of the Constitution. You want a gun to hunt?? Go for it. You don't want a gun?? Don't buy one. You feel that the police can't protect you?? Get a Permit to Carry !! It's all pretty simple.
