Me and a friend of mine drew bull elk in unit 45 here in New Mexico and did some scouting over the weekend. Well we started around Pecos, and that doesn't look promising. Way too much privately owned land. Next we headed up to just west of Las Vegas (Mineral Hill). We found a little sign but nothing significant. Mostly deer and bear sign.

I know people don't like to give up their hunting spots, so I'm not expecting too much, and I completely understand why. But if anyone has any helpful information I would greatly appreciate it. We will be scouting towards the northern end of the unit in a week or so (between Truchas and Trampas). Not looking for trophies, just wanna fill the freezer up.

Thanks for any input.

Same boat here basically. I have hunted elk before but in a different state in totally different conditions. When is your hunt and will the weather change significantly? MY hunt is in December and the elk will be in a totally different location than they are today. With the cold they will come down the mountain and be in places where there is currently no sign.

Hunt starts October 19th. Yeah, didn't think about that. I guess it will depend on the weather. I figured finding water will be key as well. I've found a few water holes that seem like they would be good spots. Just need to go out and see.

Tons of public land around Pecos. Go up the canyon past Tejeras hunt Grass mountain and Elk mountain areas. There are lots of elk in the Pecos wilderness you just have to get back to them. You can also hunt the Commissary area which is straight north of Pecos towards Las Vegas.

Pecos is my old home town and I used to guide out of there. If you can get back into wilderness it is some of the finest wild and free elk country left in America. Horses are about the only way to get into the prime areas.

Thanks! We are going back next weekend and will hike as far as we can. I think I have a good idea on where to go now.

If you go north of Pecos towards Colonias there is a ton of public land and Forrest service roads to crank out on and find critters.

I said go up the canyon to Tijeras... I meant to say go up the canyon past Terrero there is a little general store owned by the Ley family once you get past Terrero it's almost all public land.

Well leaving tomorrow, gonna hunt up by elk mountain, iron gate, and hamilton mesa. I should be in that area for a couple weeks. I have a bull tag, deer tag, and bear tag. Pretty excited!
