i've seen numerous products that fit over the butt of the gun and require no drilling or alterations. this is something i have looked into and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them. of course, any other thoughts/opinions/ideas are always welcome.

thanks.

I have the uncle mike's for my 870. Not bad, takes some getting used to. It gets a bit more complicated if you are using a butcuff that holds more ammo on the rear stock. The front swivel is included in a new magazine cap.

It would be okay to use in a pinch, but I wouldn't want one on a shotgun I was gonna carry all day. I'd get a real sling swivel for the back and a nice sling.

I've used a one piece leather sling like that -- but only for permanent carry while dragging a deer or returning to the car after unloading. While actually hunting I'd remove it and store it in a pocket. Not handy when you want to shoulder and fire quickly. A regular sling is much better then.

Not sure if this is what you are referring to:

If it is, I've used this particular sling on one of my shotguns for about three years now and it works great. Very secure and won't scratch your stock. I use it when I take my Rem 1187 dove or quail hunting..I just can't convince myself to install a sling stud on that walnut stock.

kirby, thats exactly what i was talking about. i'm with you on not wanting to drill my stock either (though mine is a snythetic 870). i went out and purchased a cheap Butler Creek sling with the loops that go around the stock and the barrel. let's just say i'm returning it tomorrow. it fits funny and it seems like it rubs the finish off the barrel (appears to make it lighter in color due to rubbing)

i did find another at a local shop that is made by Beretta. i'll probably pick it up and see how it fits on my 870. the package includes a recoil pad where the sling is attached and the front adapts to the magazine cap. i've included a picture for reference. when i actually take it out into the field, i'll be sure to report on how she fares with the sling.

I use 550 cord. I've got a few feet of it coiled up in my vest. I can tie it on for a temporary sling, carry birds with it, replace a broken boot lace, or use it for about a million other things.

It doesn't make the most comfortable sling, but it's OK for a while, especially if I pad the top of my shoulder with one of my gloves.

I believe that Steve (sm) prefers rawhide strips... but that's just 'cause he's old. :neener: :D

Somewhere in the basement, I've got a factory-made sling which attaches via a nylon loop around the stock wrist and another loop around the barrel. It works fine to carry a gun, but I don't like shooting with it on and it's a heck of a lot bigger and less useful than some extra 550 cord.

In fact, if the orginal poster would like my unused** factory sling, for free, I'll send it. Just PM me your mailing address.

** Corrected to add: The sling HAS been used, lightly. However, is not currently in use and is simply taking up space in a box of misc shooting junk in my basement.

trapper-ready, that is quite the offer. i am intrigued to try it out, but respect your decision not to shoot with it on and am thereby be deterred to accept your offer. the Butler Creek i purchased is similar to what you have described as your old sling. i'm still hesitant to try the Beretta Swiftach i saw at the local shop, but i'm almost sure i dont want to drill my stock.

that looks like the 3 point sling, which isnt exactly what i was looking for. thank you for your input though.
