I studied the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising as an undergrad History major, and I had to drink myself to sleep every night after working on that paper. It was sickening stuff, and anyone who has ever read firsthand accounts of what was done will forever be a little bit more apprehensive of ANY government. I also read Raul Hilberg's Destruction of the European Jewry. Hilberg explains how the Nazis actually worked on ways to figure out how to most effectively fit the maximum number of bodies into a mass grave to be the most efficient.
That's what happens when governments run unchecked with madmen gaining power and doing whatever the hell they want.

My Father was a man of few words. He was also an American paratrooper that was present at the liberation of a German death camp. He never elaborated on his service but he told about being at the camp and the horrors he saw.
He also told that his officers forced the civilians of the town there to be walked thru the camp and forced to see what happened there. He also related that when the German officers refused of the camp thought it was below their rank an diginty to dig graves for the dead there.
The American commander on hearing their refusal "explained" that any German officer who refused would find his way into his own grave there. They dug!

In '78 I got segregated into a "special ed." program for advanced students, who were getting bored with the normal curriculum.

Our instructor had the serial # tattooed onto her forearm, which was how she began to teach us the true History of Europe, and her family's ordeal. Her story was one of how she escaped in a transfer point, in a rail-yard, and having to live with the guilt of walking away from her family for a possible freedom.

Her message: educate all who will listen with the truth of History, see the parallels in the plight of other races/religions/creeds and the process that put them there. Do not be a victim and live silently, pass on your knowledge with reasonable education, and that truth will set you free.

Interesting thread, though I always wondered who funded the Nazis... I mean seriously how do you build a giant warmachine in a country that was facing hyper inflation?
