OK, lately I have been fascinated with the Metro and feather light loads and making a shotgun/ammo/accessory combo that has no kick, no blast, etc.

No doubt, I'll be on to another project next week. Anyway...

So porting has been a good idea for reducing muzzle rise. OK.
But it seems, esp in low-light conditions, that it would throw flames up into your field of vision. I have only noticed that phenomenon a little, but I DID notice it.

Then I see an ad for a Mini-14 barrel shroud from Accuracy Arms or something like that with an integrated muzzle brake that they claim uses escaping gas to stabilize the projectile, reduces blast, and will paint your house for free. OK.

So why not put a sleeve over the ports on a SG barrel to contain the escaping gasses? The ends of the sleeve and barrel would be even, so no one will mistake this for a suppressor! VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

And the sleeve would only need to be attatched at each end, no internal septae which could be mistaken for baffles. Also muy importante.

But it would contain the blast inside it. As for the exact method of attatchmnet to the muzzle end and the breech-most end, and how to clean the inside of the thing, and how much sight adjustment you would need to adjust for the new, larger diameter of the "barrel"... well, that's not so important right now in this brainstorming phase.

So the big question: 1. Is it legal? or is this the kind of thing the feds think is a silencer?
and
2. any thoughts on wether or not it would work?

If its legal, it might be worth pursuing.

Aside: sad that question number 1 above has to be asked first. :(

C, I'd be loath to put anything up there an idiot with a govt paycheck and aneed to justify same could construe as illegal technology.

After all these are the people that think that adding a PG and a large Capacity magazine to a semi auto turns it into an M-60.

In theory it may work. So does not drilling holes in the barrel and living with the muzzle rise.

it won't work. my dad was involved in making a port cover like that for a shooter in the SWAT magazine 3 gun match (ported shotguns aren't legal for competition in the match) the port cover was made from good steel, and sized to fit the barrel closely, and in additon to friction, was held on with hose clamps.

the first round popped off the gun, sending it 6+feet in the air.

First understand that porting only works for full loads. Contrary to popular opinion and advertizing hype it doesn't do anything for light loads. As for muzzle flash I remember a cop who had his 357 ported and he loved it until he fired it in low light . He sold it immediately.
