Has anybody tried one of these scope mounts for 1911s(or any other pistol)? It looks almost too good to be true.

I'd love to play around with a red dot on one of my 1911s, but don't want to permanently damage it with holes in the frame.

1911 AUTO GRIP SCOPE MOUNT

Replaces the grip on the right side of Colt-Style semi-auto frame so it can't interfere with thumb safety operation. "Quad Lock" installation system securely attaches the mount to the frame at four points. Accepts Weaver-style rings. No drilling or tapping.

SPECS: Black-anodized, extruded aluminum. Approx. 51/2" long, 6" (15.2cm) high. Includes mounting pins and instructions. Cannot be used with ambi safety or ambi slide release.

Looks liket he Leupold POS I tried -- replaces the right side grip panel and often interferes with ejection. I had to grind the heck off the back end to get mostly reliable ejection. Very uncomfortable as a grip too, I had to put a Houge "Hand-all" over it and trim it so the grip safety was not deactivated.

I'd give two thumbs down to this for sure.

If your intrest is in mounting a "Red Dot" sight, IMHO forget the mounts and look at the J-Point. I put one on my RIA and its fantastic: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=1734761#post1734761

Mine works great. It replaces the left grip, so it has to be used with a standard thumb safety. IIRC... the brand is NPC.

I bought a couple from Brownells, but that was about 3 years ago. I don't see them currently listed.

Clark Custom, AimTech, and B-Square still offer right side grip replacement mounts.

Good Luck...

Duplicate deleted not sure how it happened!

Edit: One that replaces the right side grip panel (like shown in the photo of the S&W) might work better, but definitely do not buy the one you showed the photo of. If you insist I'll sell you mine cheap!
