Okay, I am wanting to get a semi auto rifle for 3 gun stuff. Nothing official, just playing mostly. I was looking at AR15/M4 type .223/5.56 stuff but what other options do I have. I am not interested in the new Beretta either. I might even consider something on a 9MM platform as most of our stuff is well within 50 yards.

Unless you're over 21 with a clean record and live in a gun friendly state, you won't be getting an assault rifle. Sorry buddy, but there's no such animal as a semi-automatic assualt rifle, by the very definition, an assault rifle is select fire.

...but maybe you just meant a semi-automatic rifle? In that case, there are plenty of options available, but I need to know a bit more about how many rounds in the magazine you'd want, etc.

Okay, semantics aside because I am really, really tired of the debate--I think you know where I am going with this. I have been around a while (look at my post count) so I understand what you are saying and why you are saying it.

What else is there??? I need a semi-auto rifle, sub-$1000, preferably in a rifle caliber but 9MM may be an option, I would like the option at some point to mount optics, I don't want a Star Trek gun (thus the Beretta statement from before), I prefer a carbine length, what else?

Armalite AR180B is cheaper than most AR15, accepts same magazine, handles well, and reliable. Around 600$ in my area

My own choice would be to look for a FAL in that price range. My ORF is a good choice but they are currently out of stock. There is a small matter with the barrel alignment but I have been in touch with them and they are going to fix it.

Take a look at the AK series of rifles. They are a great value for the money. Accuracy under 100yds is more than acceptable and they are as reliable as a rifle gets. Magazines and ammo are dirt cheap. I have owned half a dozen AKs and I have only had a problem with one magazine that was dented.

You can get a Saiga for $200. It only has a 10rd mag, but can be converted later to take hi cap mags. It has a scope rail on the side so you can add a red dot or magnified optics.

You can go with any of the Norinco, Maadi or Romanian post ban AK for the $300-400 dallor range. They all seem to run great. Only the Romanian come standard w/ the side rail. Try and get a used gun that has a bunch of stuff with it.

For what a post ban AR or AR180 go for alone, you could get a completely outfitted AK plus ammo. The AK will eat anything you feed it and isn't picky about the magazines you use. While not as polished as an AR, it will go bang everytime.

I've seen at least 1 post of someone using the Bushmaster M17S bullpup. I've seen them used for $500, new for $600. Not a great trigger, but not too horrific. I bought one for plinking and home defense. It basicly has to have optics though. The "sights" it comes with are pretty useless.

If you want to try and shame the high-end junkies you can try it wih a Hi-Point carbine. ;)

Lever gun probably wouldn't cycle fast enough to be a good option but I'm not really familiar enough with 3 gun to really know.

Hmm, I think a FAL or other .308 would be a bit heavy in both weight and recoil for timed competition. Particularly at shorter ranges.

Other good options have been mentioned. I can't really think of much else to add.

How about a Kel Tec sub2000 in 9mm or 40mm it takes glock mags and others for around $380 and is factory sighted for 100 yards?

If you can find one, a Daewoo DR200 seems to be a pretty good choice. They aren't imported anymore. You still see them around, tho, and sometimes they are a pretty good deal. Uses .223 and M16 mags. Said to incorporate the best features of the M16, AK, and FAL.DR200 on gunbroker

For 3-gun, the AR is going to be the fastest in terms of operation. Aside from the AR, for under $1K, to me, that leaves an Ak type of gun (reliablility, durability, parts, etc.). I would look at having one done by AK USA (Chris) or Krebs. It's still going to be slower to operate than an AR.

Maybe a Robinson Armament rifle?

I think they are .223

But really an AR is the most practical.

I got an AR.

I heartily and enthusiastically endorse the M1 Carbine for your purposes. Find yourself a shooter, not a safe queen, and by the time you've outfitted yourself with the weapon, a gaggle of magazines, and ammo you should still be under $500.

I've heard good things about the Armailite AR-180B. For the money its sounds like a good option. I second the AK suggestions also. It depends what you want. The .223 rifles like the AR-15 or AR-180 will be more accurate. I went through this same dilemma recently. I have a few AR-15's and AK's, but I wanted something different. I ended up buying a new HK SL8-1. Sure it has neutered 10 round mags, but I am using this as a range gun that is scoped. Anyway, you can install an AR mag conversion for $300 if you need that, but I have AR's, so who cares. Its interesting and different. If I really get motivated, I can have it turned into a G36 clone. They are around $1K right now, before the mods of course.

No AR-15's, eh?

If an AR-15 is out of the picture I'd recommend a Bushmaster XM-15...
