stick or ball? If I am not mistaken, the m16/ ar15 was not designed to be used with ball powder because it was dirtier, correct?? what powder is most commonly used these days in the various types of military surplus and civilian 5.56/.223, and how can you tell??

That was the 60's. It's now 2009 so don't worry about it. With modern powders just find what works for you. I was use stick and ball, but mostly ball. A lot of bench rest guys use stick.

I use Accurate 2230 (ball powder) and IMR 3031 (stick powder) in ARs and found no difference in accuracy or residue.

So...from your posts it sounds like with advancements in technology, stick vs. ball is a nonissue and should not be worried about, correct?

I use Stick and Ball

I talked to the guys at RamShot regarding Ball X-Terminator powder. The coating applied to this fabulous powder makes magnum primers unnecessary, yet when shooting stiff .223 Remington loads, I ONLY recommend magnum primers due to their thicker (.025") shell as opposed to standard (.020") which was designed for the likes of .22 Hornet power. Stickwise (with Magnum primers) I use Alliant Reloder 10x for superior performance. And that performance is SUPERIOR in .223 Remington velocitywise from 36 to 60 grain fare within a 1-in-12" twist barrel. Nosler PARTITIONS cruise well with this configuration. cliffy

Grizz: thanks, I also use a lot of 2230 and its predecessor MR-223, good powder.

I also use 2230 for a 7.62 NATO duplication load (43.0 grains).
