Non-EBRs/military rifles: what would you get?

In a hypothetical situation, if you couldn't have an EBR what would you want in its place? Just curious because I went to a local gun shop the other day and EBR's are way over-priced (as they will be for a while) but lever-actions, deerfield carbines, and mini-14's were all under budget and it got me thinking.

I'd like an EBR someday (I got rid of all of mine for EBP's [read: Glocks] and non-tacticool rifles), but I want to wait until prices come down to build an EBR of my own. So this isn't a knock on EBR's by any means.

I'm just curious if you had to for whatever reason use a non-EBR for whatever it is you use your EBR for (hunting, home defense, plinking, just to be macho like Jack Bauer) what would you want? Or to put it another way, if your parent's or brother-in-law wanted to get an all-purpose rifle but wasn't interested in the EBR type, what would you recommend?

I picked up a lever-action 30-30 at the gun shop and I kind of feel in love with it. I traded an old WASR-10 for the 30-30 w/ a brand spankin' new Leupold VX-1 put on it.

For example:
So my reasons for the 30-30 instead of the AK:
A) Personal preference; a franken-K made by Century Intl. is just a whole lot less loveable than a classic 30-30. All I need now is a pick-up truck and a cowboy hat.
B) Hornady Leverevolution means 1" at 100 yards instead of foreign lacquer coated 10" at 100 yards.
C) 30-30 turns deer into meat - and a lot more efficiently than a Century franken-K.
D) You can get ammo boxes with John Wayne on them.
E) It reminds me of my grandpa.
F) If ninja's attack and 7 rounds of 30-30 don't stop them, I don't know that 23 more rounds would really make much of a difference. If ninja's attack with bows from 50 yards away, the 30-30 is more accurate.

So seriously, if you were to replace your EBR (this is hypothetical, purely a thought experiment) what would you put in its place?

My vote is a Mini-14 (borders on being an EBR depending on how it's dressed) or a lever-action 30-30.... unless they already had a revolver in 357 or 44, then a lever-action in the same caliber if logistics was a concern.

M1A, and If I cant have that, I suppose one of the Mini-14s. I'm not a lever-action kinda guy. But thats just me. To each his own.

EBR is kind of a vague thing like "assault rifle."

I'm guessing an M1A with a wood stock people consider a "rifle" while an M1A with a black stock, rails, and some sort of electronic optic doo-dad is an EBR. If you really need clarification, I guess you could write to the Brady campaign :neener:

I mean if you get one of those Mini-14's with one of those ugly as sin folding stocks with 3 rails on it and put a 100 round drum under it - then it has transformed from a Ranch rifle to an EBR.

I REALLY don't want to say this, but probably one of the best ways to determine if it's EBR is whether or not it is California legal.... but even then you get some ugly contraptions like AR's with a fixed magazine which is just assinine.

If you cant find or cant afford a military style rifle, then the Marlin 336 would seem to be a natural choice. Any of the other center fire pistol caliber lever guns would serve you well in stead.

I think you're gonna have to give a concise definition of EBR. I consider my black synthetic stocked M1A to be an EBR, but it would appear that others do not.
Well, I want an M1A. Specifically, a scout squad with the black synthetic stock.

However, since this is a non-EBR thread, I would want one with a walnut stock.

Its all in how you look at it.

Garand or SKS. I also like the SMLE, K98, Mosin, etc that were military rifles in the early 20th century but the Garand and SKS are at least semi-auto.

Also the M1 carbine. I don't actually think any of those are a step down from ebr's.

Lever action in 357 to match my revolver. Since the title was EBR/military not just EBR, I would think the Garand, M1A, and SKS would all be out. The mini 14 likely would too. I don't think the 30-30 offers enough over the 357 to offset the increased ammo cost and lower capacity. The 357 out of a rifle is within spitting distance of the 30-30.

i've got a rossi/puma in 480ruger that i kinda dig. pitches 400g speer gold dots pretty hard.

it's fast to shoot and swing (though not as fast as my EBRs)
takes forever to reload, but then, my shoulder would kind of prefer i wait a week between reloadings anyway

Garand first, M1 Carbine second, then probably a Mauser or another old bolt action battle rifle with accurate irons installed.

357 lever to match the revolver... inexpensive, efective round out to 150 yards or so. With practice you can cycle the lever as fast as you get your sight picture back.. very effective.

M1A or Garand is clearly a better battle rifle, but I wonder how they fit in your question...

That is my belief as well.
