I've got a real noggin' scratcher for ya!

I see that Speer used Magnum primers in all of their load data for H-110 in their magnum/large-caliber pistol loads. I want to use regular pistol primers for the same loads.

Can I safely assume that my loads will generate less pressure than Speer's?

Do regular primers ever create higher pressures than the same loads using magnum primers?

The closest I've ever come was using H335 in a .308. I started with CCI 200 regular-strength rifle primers.

When I switched to the recommended magnum primers, velocity went up noticably, as measured by the chrony. So I assume that meant that pressure went up.

I would try some over a chronograph. If velocities drop, I think its safe to assume that pressures have dropped.

You need magnum primers with H110. If you don't you will get poor ignition and wild velocity swings. You might even get a bullet hung halfway into the forcing cone and a seriously tied up gun. It isn't worth messing with, just grab some magnum primers and do it right.

H110 is one of those powders that need a magnum primer. It also doesn't do too well with reduced loads. I've heard that if you use H110 in significantly reduced loads, you actually run the risk of a kaboom.

Once preparing for a mid-July shootfest, I wound up with some CCI 500s under a stiff load of 296 in .357 using 125-gr bullets. Light bullets are supposed to be the most problematic for the WW296/H110 powder types.

They worked okay and I might have even chrono'd some. But I WOULD NOT do that and shoot them at any temp below 90° F.

There's just not any benefit to doing it, and I intend to not repeat the practice, outside of an empy ammo bunker situation and TEOTWAWKI.

I can vouch for inconststant velocity/pressure loading H110 w/o magnum primers as I just shot some today.

Pretty much what you get, and I crimped the piss out of them, so don't think that will help. Just go get some magnum primers...H110 is a fantastic powder in magnums; why waste it with incorrect components? Plus you'll get lots of unburnt powder and fouling.

How does Winchester rate their large pistol primers as both magnum and standard?? Are they really hot standard and weak magnum primers or ??

From my chrono data I'd say that's an accurate description. I don't trust them for H-110 and use CCI Magnum primers for those loads. Particularly in my down-loaded .50 AE rounds.

Magnum primers burn a bit hotter and a bit longer than standard primers. And it's blam, blam, blam, BLAM, blam. Not boom. Didn't you ever read Sgt. Rock comics? 'Boom' is an artillery piece.
