Hey everyone,

Need your infinite wisdom. My step-brother is going hunting this year and is looking to borrow my slug gun.

I have a Savage 110 Bolt Action Shotgun with rifled barrel.

He's never really shot before, so if there is any type of LOW RECOIL deer hunting round that would be great.

Since the barrel is already rifled, I don't need a rifled slug.

Do you guys have any recommendations for a low recoil, non-rifled slug?

Thanks in advance.

I would look to the newer Winchester or Remington SABOT loads to begin with, they are designed with the rifled barrel in mind,,there are others out there, but may be hard to find in some areas,, Haven't shot any but have been told that Federal offers a reduced recoil slug load, mite work in a rifled barrel if its not the old Foster type

What you want to look for for best results in a rifled barrel shotgun is a sabot slug. There are several reduced recoil/managed recoil offerings on the market now from different manufacturers. Note that sabot slugs tend to cost more than the plain old rifled slugs intended for smoothbore barrels, prepare yourself for a bit of 'sticker shock' but pay the frieight for sabots- they work better in rifled barrels.

Try one of the 'big box' sporting goods stores (Dick's, Cabela's, Gander Mountain etc), if you don't find anything similar to the offerings described below at your local dealer's shop:

"Hunters looking for 35% less recoil from their sabot slug gun but still seeking performance can rely on the Platinum Tip Hollow Point WinLite load. This load is designed for use in rifled barrels only. "

"The best-selling terminal performance and accuracy of our Copper Solid Slug is now available in a reduced recoil load. With 40% less recoil, they’re perfect for anyone who wants outstanding on-game results without the rearward punch. Or, use them to sight-in, then step up to full loads. There’s no finer slug load for young or recoil-sensitive hunters."
