Noober questions

What’s the average fee for your FFL transfer in your area/gun shop that you use? (Just curious to know how much or less I might be paying--just to make me feel better. Or worse.)

Have any experience with shops that sell displays? Would you want to buy a display model anyway?

the last gun i bought from my FFL he charged my what it was in the magazine. now i will have some paper work to do this spring on a transfer. I will give him probably 20 dollars...

The variation is immense!!!

I pay my local guy $10 - have done for ages - he has also had good business from me too. Many places charge $20 or more and - there are some places too that charge a % commision in effect, on the gun value - which IMO sucks bigtime.

On balance - if you can go around the $20 region then I reckon you are in a sorta average territory. It does depend too (instance my comment on my local guy) whether you are casual or a regular customer.

As for dsiplays, the guns shops I frequent aren't huge, they don't have one display and many in boxes in the back. What they have on display is what you are buying.

This is true for every gun store I've ever been in, even the really big ones. WYSIWYG

So as you can tell from my question I obviously assumed displays were displays only and the firearm one obtains is untouched in-the-box but obviously not! That sucks.

Anyway, so the only option for something untouched is a special order/transfer then?

It all really depends. If all the gun shops in your area are charging you an arm and a leg try looking at pawn shops which have an FFL, sometimes they are a bit cheaper.

In some stores, the display firearms are just displays, and when you want one they reach behind them on the shelf and take one of the 30 boxes and hand it to you. Depending on the gun, of course.

The going rate for transfers in my area of SW Ohio is $25, however I did find a FFL who only charges $10 plus tax. I have to drive a little farther to get to him, but it is worth it.

I have never bought a display gun, unless it was used. I would want some kind of a discount on a new display gun, after all once it is displayed and handled, it really is not new any longer IMO. poppy

$25 seems to be the going rate in Fort Worth. I did have one gun shop try to charge me $100 - which I promptly walked out of. Another tactic to watch out for is sales tax or a percentage on the value of the gun. Walk out of any shop that tries to do that. Flat fee is what you want - no $25 plus 10% garbage.

The stuff in the case (unless otherwise specified as used) will be unfired. Don't know what you gain by paying more money simply for fewer fingerprints.

Even if you order one, which I did for my .17 cal rifle, the gun store owner will probably inspect it when doing his end of the paperwork. The guy I bought it from even cleaned it for me (but I think he was just flirting with me ). Untouched isn't going to happen.

I guess so (shrug). Many manufacturers test fire, so they're not really "untouched" even from the manufacturer.

Personally I don't mind buying used firearms, let alone ones that have been in a display cabient. They're not a rapid wear-out item. So long as they are kept well and not abused, I expect a quality firearm's service life to be longer than my own

I fully expect to hand my guns down to my kids, and have them get years of service out of them.

It's 20-25 bucks in my area. All the big box stores won't transfer anything in that they haven't sold you, and the pawns shops are united in keeping it at 20 minimum. Some good dime for 10 minutes of "work."

Every gun I've ever bought from a store has been on display. It always starts with "hey, can I take a closer look at that _________ right there?"
