(AP) - A man fatally shot a Norfolk police officer and then was killed by other officers who returned fire early Thursday outside a bar, police said.

Officer Sheila Herring-Patrick, 39, of Virginia Beach, was shot once in the abdomen and once in each leg, in areas not protected by her bullet-proof vest, police spokesman Chris Amos said. She died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital about an hour after the shooting.

It is always a sad day when an officer lays down their life in the line of duty. I shall keep Officer Herring-Patrick and her family in my prayers.

At least the good people of Virginia have seen justice done now, instead of years later. Not much of a consolation, though.

She survived being a Detroit LEO, and just joined the Norfolk PD in Feb 2002. What a bummer....! :cuss:

Hmm, didn't know that she had been an LEO in Detroit. Makes me wonder if the BG got a lucky shot or she figured Norfolk is a 'safe' place.

When I first heard of it, I figured it was a rookie that got stuck on the street and got surprised.

Still, a sad day.

RIP Sis...

Cops generally don't move because of "safer" place. They move because they get sick of the city and the politics and even the house mortage and expenses (small city home compared to larger country home).

She and her back up were interviewing a suspect when he pulled a gun and shot her three times, she was well like and had spent a year or so with the Norfolk Airport police before joining the NPD
