Hey guys, I just picked up a Norinco 1887 lever shotgun and I'm curious what kind of loads they can handle. Should I just stick to regular 2 3/4 shells or would 2 3/4 magnums be ok?
They're fun. When I first got mine I took it to a skeet shoot. People stood in line to shoot it! We even ran out of 12ga shells (most were shooting 20s) and one guy went home for more shells.
It'll shoot any 2 3/4" shell. Your shoulder won't last very long shooting short magnums though. The magnum shotshell has more pellets at a slightly lower velocity than the standard shell. Bigger payload=more recoil, and with the stock drop on the '87 you'll feel it.
I love it so far. I've put some dove shot through it and some 00 buck. I was really just curious about the magnum because I accidentally picked up the wrong box. I also got some 000 buck I'm a little nervous about firing.
000 buck will be about the same as 00 buck, no worries. Slugs will have some bump, but nothing you can't handle. Find some of the 00 Federal Reduced Recoil with the FliteControl wad. Easy on the shoulder and tight patterns even out of the cylinder bore barrel. They make reduced recoil slugs, too.
