In a recent gunshow trade, I acquired a Norinco SKS. This gun had a bayonet attached. I know that it is technically against the law for some Norinco guns to have bayonets on them due to either the 86 import ban or the Clinton Executive Order, I can’t remember which.

Anyway, I went ahead and removed the bayonet from the gun, but I am wondering if there is a way to tell if this gun came in before the law in question. How can I tell if this rifle was imported with the pig sticker or if it was (illegally) added later?

What a stupid law.

Thanks

There is no way to tell absolutely for sure. The best bet is to have the gun shop mark on the sales slip that the bayo came attached with it.

I had a conversation with the ATF on this very subject last year. They told me there is no way to tell when a SKS was imported. The records are too sketchy and too many duplicate numbers. He did tell me that it was only illegal to mount one, not to have it on the rifle. The act of installing it is a nono, but if it came with one, you are fine.

However, I would call them and ask just to be sure.

Just remember that anything ATF tells you over the phone is worthless. If it's not in writing from them, they didn't say it.

For my use, I would leave the thing off anyway, as it adds weight. But if I end up trading or selling the thing off, I would want the bayonet on it (if it is legal of course.)

Thanks again.
