Norinco SKS

I originally posted this on my home-forum, M4C... but i should have guessed it wouldn't be well received... haw!

My guess is there's more SKS/Tapco owners here. So without further ado;

Hola, gentlemen.

My buddy's father in law just gave him an old beat up Norinco SKS. I know absolutely nothing about SKSs or pretty much any eastern gun. I'm under the impression they're similar to AKs, but are basically to the AK as a mini14 is to an AR or M1A. parts probably aren't too interchangeable, if at all?

He wants to tacticalize it.. he's building two ARs, but thinks it'll be a while till he's got a complete gun. Running his 10/22 next to my ARs is lame, so if there's a way to convert the SKS to a drop box magazine and adjustable stock and add a pistol grip, he'd like to do that. give him something with a little more boom so he can play with the big boys.

Furthermore, it's not in great shape. the stock is cracked, the action is pitting slightly, and it LOOKS like somebody's done some home-gunsmithing to what i'm guessing is the bolt carrier. It'd be good to know what needs to be checked and for what, before we run it too hard. At this point, we're not even sure if it's functional.

And what's up with the safety- your finger strikes the trig every time you disengage the safety. any existing solutions to that impending ND?

Any suggests/threads/worthy websites/etc?

The TAPCO Fusion stock and 20rd mags work well with the Norinco SKS's. I used them to update a well worn Paratrooper I have. In the pic below, it's the second from the left.

how solid is the stock? is the receiver extension on axis with the bore? i'm guessing the one on the right in an AK?

I would bet that is a converted Saiga .308. Makes it look like a Vepr clone.

Now I'm guessing a cosmetic job like that wouldn't be too difficult, assuming it is entirely cosmetic.

Does a job like that entail any grinding or milling of anything? Or is it just a "drop-in" deal.

Yes, all, that is a Saiga 308, fully converted with K-Var OD furniture.

I used Dinzag internals and am quite happy with the outcome. It's like an AK on steroids. I have the Surefire 25rd mags for it, but it's wearing the standard 8rd for the group photo. The next thing it needs is a muzzle break/flashhider to complete the look. A lot of folks leave the handguard alone when they convert Saigas, but , to me, they just don't look like an AK without changing the handguard as well.

I conteplated buying a wooden Draganov furniture set, but I really like the green look.

What do ya'll think of the homemade camo job on the Norinco SKS next to it?

The little paratrooper is probably the most fun to shoot, the muzzle break on it works great and really helps keep the gun on target. The stock seems to be just as rugged as the factory one on my Bushy, no problems there. Even though the Fusion stock has a scope rail, I still like the iron sights. (the scope mount on it in this pic has since been removed).

The paint job looks great, and the paratrooper looks like a sweet setup, but something to me just feels right about shooting an original, Russian Simonov carbine. It feels an interesting niche in military firearms. Sort of in between, in concept and design, large caliber MBR's, and small caliber assault rifles. It has the feel of a large caliber battle rifle, but it shoots like an assault rifle. I personally love the platform as a cheap and very serviceable surplus rifle.

But MAN are they expensive (relatively) now. you used to be able to get a good one for well under 200 dollars. I have seen Russian ones jacked up to almost 400 dollars.

I'd love to have a Russian SKS, maybe one day I'll find one for the right price. I also like the look of an original Mil-surp gun, I have a few. Here's a pic of my Yugo SKS in original form. It is by far the most accurate of my SKS's.
