The Chinese copy of the Winchester 97 trench Gun seems to be (depending on whose opinion you hear) a relatively decent copy for the money, which averages around $400 or so. If a US company were to make a Win 97 clone along the same lines, could the price be competitive at all?

Probably not. $400 will buy you a much used 97, or a more modern Big Four pump with something left over for ammo.

Check the archives, there's plenty of input on these.

It looks like a 97 but that is where the similarity stops, the quality is night and day. I handled one while waiting for the paperwork on my 870 and was underwhelmed to say the least. If you are intent on a 97 I would take my time to look around - around here you can get a fairly decent one for $400.

I have three of the Chinese '97s. I am well pleased with them. They are reliable, pattern well with buckshot and seem well made and fitted.
You will not touch an original trench gun for anywhere close to the price. Yes, you can find used '97 sporters and riot guns but original trench guns are $800.00 and up. WAY up. And if you did fing a decent original, you'd have paid so much, you'de be afraid to shoot it. If you want a fun gun that you can enjoy, or even keep for defense, the Norinco is what you want.

BTW; 2 of my 3 are trench guns, and both took an original Winchester made 1917 bayonet withoug the slightest fitting required. You should strip the gun down and clean the preservative oil out of it and lube it properly. And be sure to tighten the barrel shroud screws good.

What SMLE said. I have one and while it does have some flaws, in general it shoots and handles well.

IF I had a chance to get a good Winchester 97, I'd do it. But I do not recall ever seeing one for sale around this area.
