Hello fellow NC members. Twice this week I've encountered discussions about proposed changes to the NC handgun purchase permit law from credible sources. A local gun shop clerk and NC wildlife officers teaching a bowhunter safety course stated "that's about to change" in terms of the requirement to aquire/buy a handgun "purchase permit" from the Sheriff's Dept prior to purchasing a handgun.

Did a little googling on this....and searched THR...no info out there yet.
I am hoping this will change, as I went through the process last year which included; formal permission request through my entire military chain of command, a formal approval letter from my CO, an interview downtown with the Sheriff's Deputy (wife present), my wife had to confirm that she was comfortable with me owning a handgun, the requisite permit fee, waiting for the permit in a lobby as people were being booked in and out of jail (child was present...didn't expect to have to expose her to that)... What a painful process it was to break through those administrative barriers!!!

Does anyone have any factual information about the possibility of NC repealing the handgun purchase permit requirement? Let's keep our fingers crossed.

On Tuesday, March 24, State Senator Doug Berger (D-7) introduced Senate Bill 782, which would repeal the law requiring people to get a permit from their sheriffs to purchase a handgun. SB 782 has been assigned to the Senate Committee on Commerce, where it has yet to be assigned a hearing. Please begin contacting your State Senator, to thank him or her for signing on as a co-sponsor or urge them to do so as a show of support of this necessary bill.

I live in Forsyth county and I got so many that i did not have to wait 5 days, just filled out the paperwork and they gave me the permit. You could get your ccw and not have to worry about it:D

Thanks Texas Rifleman for the information! Sounds like promising news for the change.

arjppj, good that the process was fairly painless for you...not so for NC miitary members in my county (Onslow) ...kinda ironic. I've considered CCW to help avoid any legal complications with carrying a handgun while bowhunting in Colorado. Was not aware that holding a CCW eliminated the need for aquiring the purchase permit.

It shouldn't matter if it was a painless encounter, its a infringement on your rights to conduct business with who you please when you please. NC is the only state that has this "permit" system. Granted, other states require transfers to go through a FFL (CA) but it doesn't matter.

This is a racist originated law and has no place in today's society. I am no longer in NC, but I hope I can see this law changed. NC member should write in and voice their support for this bill.

We finally revoked our "Permit to Purchase" law in Missouri in 2008. Same situation, go to the Country Sheriff, get your "mother may I", take it to a dealer and have an instant check.

The original law was a Jim Crow racist attempt to disarm blacks, and we struck it down. You can do the same.

It got us from a "D" to an "F" rating by the Brady Campaign. That alone is worth the fight.

Had no idea the law had racist roots...VERY interesting...also is that military base orders are written by the law's influence (Commanding Officer letter of approval) before the local sheriff will approve. Even more ironic is that the Deputy Sheriff who signed my permits is an African American man!!! This law has to go.

This is the only direct problem I have with NC gun laws. I got my ccw mainly just for this reason, I have since gotten more involved with carrying and do it daily. But it makes no sense what so ever to have to get handgun purchase permits, which cost $5 a piece and my county only gives out 4 at a time. Then it takes weeks for them to be issued. It is a defacto waiting period as all they do is a background check which is done when you buy any firearm. If anything these could be a major loophole. If you get handgun purchase permits which are valid for 5 years, then commit a crime, as long as you still have them you can buy a gun and skip the instant check.
