A North Carolina state trooper fatally shot a Virginia man during a struggle after pulling the suspect over in a car that had been reported stolen.
The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Norman Randolph Dove Jr., of Newport News, Virginia, said Renee Hoffman, a spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
Trooper H.B. Stevens pulled the suspect over around 4:20 p.m. yesterday along the Vance-Warren county line, Hoffman said. The suspect was not wearing a seat belt.
When Stevens checked the suspect's driver's license and the car's registration, he discovered the license had been revoked and the car had been reported stolen, she said.
A struggle ensued, during which the trooper fired a shot, wounding the suspect, Hoffman said.
The man was taken to Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson, she said. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect died at the hospital or en route there, or where he was hit.
Stevens received a minor injury to his hand during the struggle, Hoffman said. He has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, which is routine with shootings involving officers.
Dove was on parole at the time of the shooting. He was convicted of robbery with a dangerous weapon in December 1997 and was sentenced to nearly six years in prison.
He was released July 19, according to the North Carolina Department of Correction.
