A bulletproof vest helped save the life of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer in North Carolina, who was shot when he responded to a reported house break-in.

26-year-old Officer Todd Burkard was one of two officers first at the scene in west Charlotte. He was confronted by two gunmen, one of whom fired at him with a shotgun.

The officer's vest deflected one shotgun pellet to the chest, but he was wounded in the leg.

Burkard fired back with his department-issued .40-caliber pistol, hitting one of the suspects. The other man ran through a nearby yard and was arrested minutes later as other officers arrived, police said.

Burkard was treated at Presbyterian Hospital and released. He is on administrative duty, which is routine for officers who fire their weapons on-duty.

Burkard was the first Charlotte-Mecklenburg officer shot while on duty since November 2001, when an officer was shot in the leg during a burglary call.

Police said suspect, 27-year-old Simon Lamar Clark, of Shelby, was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm and then taken to the Mecklenburg jail.

He was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of cocaine with intent to sell or distribute, first-degree burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana and resisting a public officer.

The second suspect, 18-year-old Orlando Oglesby, of Shelby, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill a law enforcement officer, robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting a public officer.

The person inside the home at the time wasn't hurt.
