The new Model 21 appears to be a quality rifle, but as nice as the new action is, I think the bolt design is quite ugly for such a nice rifle. The bolt handle looks like something that came out of a High School shop class. I'm used to seeing smooth bolt handles and nicely-purposed rear ends.

The good news is that it shouldn't be too hard to redesign it to be as nice as expected on the quality of rifle it's supposed to be. They just need a few people to let them know what is desired on a quality rifle these days.

Looks like a custom 700 to me...... The handle's supposed to be interchangeable, and I do find a kind of unattractive. The shroud I rather like..... There just isn't enough angular lines on the action to match.

Im up in the air if i like they way the gun looks overall.

In terms of attractive rifles, I think the "700" is one of the finest looking actions. If it's going to be blued steel, I like the bone stock 700 action aesthetic.

If I'm going with something more modernistic, which I have been lately, I usually go to a Christensen since they don't change the look of the basic gun very much.
I do kinda hate their bolt knobs though.

Good news is that they designed the handle for easy interchangeability. I'd imagine Glades Armory will have some options for it pretty soon. https://gladesarmory.com/

Glades Armory’s product finish quality and customer service are neck and neck for the crappiest in market.
Yeah, I can't say I've been hugely impressed with the finish on the glades bolt handles I've gotten. Buuuut they are the cheapest complete replacement handles on the market........

This thread needs pictures.

Edit: Thanks Speedo66, we posted at the same time.

And yeah…. It’s ugly! Obvious they were going for a “modern” aesthetic. But I really doubt it performs any better than something with a nicely rounded bolt handle and a more traditional striker.

I agree. Although, style is quite an individual commodity. I’m sure there are those who think it’s the looking thing out there. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, after all.

I agree with above. Being replaceable is a good feature. And Glades will no doubt take advantage of that at some point. I’ve used Glades Bolt Handles for my Savages for years. But recently I found a 6AL4V Titanium replacement. And that will now reside. I’m a fan of Tactical style Bolt Knobs. I believe one of those would look equally as good on this Action .:)

Sorry I read this a few times and looked at the rifles on their site. The bolt looks just fine by me. Form follows function. I would have to see it in person to render a full opinion. Like Picher said, who doesn't like a nicely-purposed rear end. I think the design will do well. Different strokes for different . . .

Yes, The bolt is ugly and sticks way out where it will probably catch on everything while carrying it through thick cover. It seems most of the new offerings are not to my liking but I am a dinosaur when it comes to firearms.

I agree nature boy. I machine my own like the Badger style. Just did one in 6AL4V Ti & posted a thread in the Gunsmithing forum. The “Tactical” style, as the Badger is known as, is simple, provides nice function & feel & looks great.

Hmmm, looks pretty generic to me, doesn't really stand out as particularly attractive or unattractive.

Pictures folks, we need pictures when we're discussing ugly. Yeah, I agree, pretty homely.
Is it just me or does That bolt make the Action like the offspring of Glock and Hi-Point! I think the bolt is the worst! If it were somewhat round instead of looking like a blacksmith heated up a square piece of bar stock and twisted it.

The action by its self wouldn't be bad at all.

That's actually exactly what it's supposed to look like lol.
The fluting pattern is generally called wrought iron.... Though it's not as twisty as im used to seeing.

Perhaps it looks better somehow in person, but in photos the bolt itself has an appearance of weakness to me due to how much smaller the bolt body is than the corresponding raceway in the receiver. Do not like the bolt, and the handle looks like an afterthought. I guess I'll just stick with my old-fashioned Mauser actions.

I personally like the bolt handle. The rest of the action is a bunch of poorly thought out angles.
I like over size bolt handles for the ease of use. They are clunky looking though.

I see more and more of that exact type of bolt handle on competition bolt guns. Typically these are single shot rifles, centerfire and rim fire. I don't have one on any of my rifles, but then, my stuff is before this period. There must be some sort of an advantage. Based on appearances, the bolt handle sticks out much further than the classic pre 64 M70, but then the pre 64 M70 was carried on a person as they walked into the woods. Do any hunters walk into the woods now, or do they all pack 1000 lbs of gear on an ATV and drive? So having a wide bolt handle that would catch on brambles, etc, is not a consideration.

I think the extra leverage, big graspable end, is what the target shooters types want. With my older rifles, I regularly place the thumb on top of the receiver or stock to acquire the leverage needed to open the bolt. If an individual is prone with a bi pod, that may be an uncomfortable hand placement.

I did look at the action description. The "M16 type" extractor could also be called a Mauser extractor.

I would have to look at the action to see how the extractor is supported in the event of a massive gas leakage. Don't want the things blowing out.

Can’t say I care for it’s looks. But if I functioned phenomenally I could shut my eyes and live with it. I tend to like the model 70 and 77 action and safety’s more than the 700. And I like a well done sporterized Mauser. That said, I’ve never actually had any hands on experience with a Nosler rifle. I might love it; never know.
