When I was growing up my grandfather had a S&W rifle. It was his favorite rifle and he was very good with it. Unfortunately it was stolen some time in the late 80s. He replaced it with a Model 70, but said it just wasn't the same even though it was "basically the same rifle."

I always interpretted that to mean that the stolen rifle had been a winchester sold under the S&W banner, but I can't find any info on any of those ever being made. I have heard of Howa making rifles for S&W, and thought maybe it was one of those.

I was hoping the rifle sages on THR could help me figure out the details of the rifle in case I ever get the chance to pick one up. Here are the specifics I remember:

Caliber: .270
Finish: Blue
Stock: unknown wood, Monte Carlo (I think), laquer/varnish type finish
Barrel: 24"ish
Manufacture date: unknown, but probably purchased in late 70s -early 80s

That's about all I know. Can anyone give me the low-down on S&W rifles that meet those criteria? Thanks

They were made by HOWA of Japan.

A modern Weatherby Vanguard would be pretty close.
