Errors In Reporting

Reporter states someone fired a "rifle" at him.

Man indicated couch, comments that the "idea of shooting someone with a 12 ga slug" is kind of personal.

Interesting that the man (who is "not much of a gun person") knew what that was, and understood that that was a "personal" choice of ammo.

Later, he shoots the bad guy. "I meant to shoot him in the leg," but its a "wild gun" to shoot, and "I'm not that much of a gun person."

"That much" of a gun person? "Wild gun" to shoot? Notice that his choice of weapon is never mentioned. No mention made of his having purchased the gun after the first incident.

So, what, he already owned the "wild gun" prior to the first incident?

There are missing facts and contradictory facts in the story as reported.

Anyone have additional data?

I'm willing to bet

He knows more about guns than he is letting on
& he also has a clue about why he is in the crosshairs.

.
Sounds like a guy with a good head on his shoulders... with a great lawyer.

Yeah, there's more here than meets the eye. Did he somehow p-off the bangers? Bad deal? Owe them money? Living in their 'hood? Fail to pay his danegelt? Fail to give the little bastards their "respect"?

I recall an Ayoob article from several years ago that said that indicated that one should try to pass the buck- try 'n play novice so to speak. That specific article was about why you shouldn't use handloaded ammo for SD. He wrote that if you used handloads, it would show that you knew what you were doing and intended kill the perp. If you used equivelent factory ammo, you could say, "Well I asked the guy at the store for a box of .38's and this is what he gave me..." I do agree he knew a lot more than he lets on.

I'm willing to bet

I'm having mixed feelings on this one. I thought his comment about money was a little out of place. However, it can be really easy to get on some folks badsides, and if their in a gang, their homees.

Odd indeed

This is indeed strange. A couple things strike me:

1. "He looked at me and had the gun in his right hand. I shot him before he could shoot me." .....Espino ran away and had been shot in the back.

2. The last comment, "I wish Espino would have just come asked me for the job instead of come to kill me."

People don't attack a man twice in one month for giggles. This man said "I shot him before he could shoot me"...but the perp was shot in the back. Something's not adding up.

Did anyone else think it looked like he was trying to hold back a smile when he said, "I'm not much of a gun guy."

I'm with the he knew why and he is making out to know less then he does. He is probably a member here of THR, and he's read enough to know what to say and what not to say. ;)

I doubt he owed these guys any money or anything like that. He probably just flipped one the bird because they swerved into his lane, or something. Like the mom said, he isn't one to fear much. That might mean when some gang banger said something to him, he didn't step down.

How long until the third attempt?

I'd take the "shot in the back" part with a grain of salt.

I've read things where a perp was shot in the side or underarm, and the media reported it as being "shot in the back."

Perhaps Espino was sidestepping through the curtain

"... shot in the back..."

There just may be a simple reason for that to occur [if the suspect was shot in the back].

It takes time for your brain to send the signals to tell your hands to fire a weapon. It takes time for your brain to send signals to tell your hands not to shoot.

If your brain has sent the “shoot” signals and the suspect turns as those signals are sent, you’ll likely shoot them in another part of their body before you can stop the process.

It happens- more often than people realize.
