The only gun I owned before the age of 54 was a top break Iver and Johnson that my Great Grandmother owned that was passed down to me. She used it to protect herself from banditos on the Texas border. My Grandparents usually had a shotgun in the closet and we had a rifle available to hunt with when visiting. I never even thought of owning a gun until my 40s. Even then, I did not think I should have one as I thought I might use it on my wife at the time. I also never thought of actually needing one as I am not afraid of much of anything.

In my teens, I was in the ROTC and our High School had a shooting range under the school swimming pool. I was a pretty good shot and was asked to be on the rifle team but I thought, at the time, that it was boring, so did not join.

It wasn't until this year that a few things came together to put my mind in the frame of gun ownership. First, my daughter joined the Marines. Second, I live alone now. Third, the current political environment and past pushes for gun control (good for gun sales). Forth, I felt I am responsible enough to own one (see ex wife). All of this together and the thought of going to the range with my daughter (my only child and one who is good with firearms) led me to buy a 45 to use for target practice.

Since then, I have purchased five more pistols, a couple of lever action rifles, and one Evil Black Rifle in .308. I love em! I am hooked!

I now have my Carry License and have learned all of the responsibility that comes with that privilege (given by God).

I did have some limited training on an M16 in the Air Force, but in the 70s, that was not a lot.

By the way. My daughter loves going to the range with me and shooting paper. On a side note, I told her that people use the EBR (Evil Black Rifles) for hunting, and she stated that, "I never thought of hunting animals with one". We laughed!

So my question is, who of you started late in life, like me, and why?

Age 20 when I got married and my new wife and I took up residence in an apartment. I felt it was my obligation to have some means of protection so bought a single shot 12 gauge shotgun; that was all I could afford at the time. My family was horrified that I bought a gun.

A few years later we ended up in a different part of the country and in a bad area of a large city. We bought our first handgun (Ruger Security Six in .357 Mag) to protect ourselves from the criminal element that ruled that part of the city. The rest is history; we are well armed now.

I bought my first when I was 23, I had gone to the range as a "something to do" thing on a sunday and was pretty hooked. On my licence application that I soon filled out a few months later for firearms, I could not select "self defence" as a reason for owning firearms, but that was the real reason. Later on I just got more and more into it and have been collecting ever since. I enjoy mostly black powder all military style guns.

I did not come up in a "shooting" family. My family was/is fairly indifferent towards guns.

Buddy of mine took me to a gun shop when I was about 22. Bought my first gun soon after.

I didn't buy my first gun until I was 35, although there were guns in the house on display when I was growing up and I shot occasionally.

I bought three guns when I was 26 or 27, kept them for a while, then sold them. Twenty years later I started back in a big way.

My dad had a few guns (a .357 revolver for PD and some .22 rifles for plinking) since I was little. My first was a Ruger P89 in about '93 when I was 23. I still have it of course. The serial number is so low that It's lower than the first one Ruger lists on their site in the serial numbers and years shipped list. :)

I started late, but have been making up for lost time. I grew up around the idea of guns & shot as a kid, but my father died when I was young so I never got to go hunting with him. I was always pro gun & shot every few years, but never owned a gun until recently.

My family didn't care much about guns when I was growing up. My dad had a couple of rifles stored in their cases that he'd probably last used elk hunting when I was tiny, and a S&W .357 that I didn't know he had until I was 16. Before I bought one a couple of months ago (I'm 28) I'd only shot guns on a handful of occasions, mostly with my ex-boyfriend, who had at least 10 of them. He kept a .45 in the nightstand and wanted to make sure I could be comfortable using it if I needed to, so we went to the range several times and I started enjoying it. When we split up I was living by myself for the first time and doing fieldwork all alone out in the woods and started to feel like it was really irresponsible to not be well prepared to defend myself. And besides, shooting is really fun and I seem to be pretty good at it. So now I've applied for my concealed carry license and I'm shopping for a carry gun and a .22 rifle.

I have a few friends who like guns, including one of my girl friends who grew up shooting AKs in the California desert with her family, but most of them are uncomfortable with the idea of them, which is kind of a bummer. I think I might be able to get one or two of them to the range, though. ;)

I've been shooting since I was 6 or so, but I didn't own any firearms personally until I turned 21, when I bought a shotgun. The main reason was that for some reason my parents had a thing against giving guns as gifts for Christmas or birthdays (might have been a cost issue), and my dad had enough guns to go around so it didn't really matter.

Late

I grew up on a farm and my dad taught me gun safety. It was just what you did, not a lecture. I've never forgotten. He had a 16 ga. Iver Johnson single and I had a JC Penney 22 LR. (I had to wait until I was 14 and deemed responsible). We hunted squirrels and rabbits. (and ate them). I still have both of the guns. The Iver Johnson must be 80 years old. Then I didn't own guns for a long time until I started thinking about home protection. I have no interest in killing animals any more. Now I have 5 handguns and a Mossburg 500 cruiser as well as the JC Penney and the Iver Johnson.

I bought a M&P 9mm after my house got broken into a year and a half ago (22 yrs old). Recently just built an AR15 as my first rifle. I believe in taking responsibility for myself, not the government, for my protection and the protection of my future family. Relying on the police is irresponsible.

The family never had anything to do with guns. Not against them, just not interested. I shot in the boy scouts a few times and liked it. Didn't think about it again until college, bought my first at almost 21 and now at a little over 22 have 6.

I was definitely a late bloomer.
Dad never had any guns.....didn't think I would want to own one.
Never shot one till the age of 36....when a co-worker took me to a range and had me shoot his S&W 66 and his Sig P226.:D
Haven't been the same since....guess you can say I fell in love :uhoh:

And look at me now...been through over 100 guns...and I reload 7 different HG calibers......:D

39  6 months ago got my first. mossberg 12 pump for the house. also added a p22 for fun. next is a 9mm compact for carry. my family is serious Anti :cuss:

Bought my first gun 3 years ago at 43. A Springfield G.I.. Now I'm trying to make up for lost time and go shooting every chance I get.:)

Mid 30's. Grew up abroad where hand guns were illegal, and no one really had anything else. Got a lesson as a birthday present about 8 months ago. To date, have put around 3000 rounds through my xd 9 and even more through my .22 browning. Just got a shotgun about 6 weeks ago. Have about 500 rounds through that.. Going to get rifle lessons next paycheck. Will no doubt buy one shortly after.
Yes, I am addicted. Fortunately, my g/f is also addicted.

my family is serious Anti

Isn't it funny that the people you own these firearms to protect are so opposed to you owning them? Why do people object to having an armed bodyguard?

My parents are very anti. Girlfriend was indifferent, she's coming around though. I'm taking her to the range this weekend :)

Started a little late, my Dad wanted to get me my first .22 when I was 10, Mom made him wait until I turned 12. In hindsight, I think Mom was right. Dad had to console himself somehow. He got a Gold Cup, and I had to wait 2 years. Now Dad is gone, that little .22 is teaching it's third generation of riflemen, and I have that Gold Cup. The 'wheel gun' of life, what a great ride!!

The "Gun Culture" is always open, and the welcome sign is always out. Glad you all joined us!:)

I started in 2002 with a Marlin 60. Quickly got bored with it and bought a Ruger 22/45. Got my CC license after realizing the crime rate in the area was...not good.

I was 22 when I got my first gun, a Glock 17. I sold it later when I needed some cash. Eventually I got back into it and have a few guns. I am hoping to get a few more though. I have decided to stick with 9mm for all my guns from now on. Except for .22's and a .45 ACP 1911.

I was 32 or 33 when I bought my first gun, a 12 ga Mossberg and I got my carry license at age 39.

I have only a modest collection now, but it fits my wants/needs pretty well.
