Not Crazy About Cowboy Holsters...

So I'm going to need a holster for a Ruger Super Blackhawk (5.5"), except I'm not really crazy about traditional cowboy holsters. It may be because I've never used one firsthand (and I just can't see enjoying the hammer thong...), but I think I'd rather stick to something a bit more modern, for lack of a better word.

Are there any companies that make modern holsters for the Ruger SBH? Or should I just try and find a cowboy style holster I'll like?

I do know that if I have to choose a cowboy-style holster, I don't want any elegantly styled leather. This is going to be something I'll be wearing in the open desert and forested mountains, not to dinner in a 5-star lodge.

When I bought my SBH 10'' years ago there werent many options for a barrel that long. I finally found a leather Bianchi cross draw holster. They are still around I saw them in a catalogue the other day. It is a leather holster made to fit on a regular 2 or 2.5 inch belt but it is not a cowboy type holster just a plain utilitarian holster that comes in several legnths and configurations. I think Midway has them just a thought good luck.

Take a look at Rugers web-site. They've got a number of choices. I suspect you'll find something you'll like.

BTW. These don't ride straight up and down, but have a muzzle rear rake.

I got a regular Hunter 1100 model holster for my 4 3/4" SAA. For actually carrying the gun on my belt, I much prefer the snap retention strap instead of a leather thong over the hammer spur.

Since I think you mentioned this gun for carrying bow hunting, and especially if your gonna be climbing up into tree stands, for sure avoid the hammer thong old school stuff and get a good retention strap holster.

Unless you just prefer leather, you might check here. I got a good rig for my 5.5" Ruger Backhawk 45 Colt last year for deer hunting.

Here's my Blackhawk in a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake holster with straps that convert it into an IWB holster. Take the straps off and it's a regular OWB Pancake style holster. You can order it with or without the extra straps. He also offers other field and range style holsters as well with a bunch of options.

This type of pancake holster will hold the weapon tight against the body w/o a thumb break; with excellent retention ... but I'm sure one can be added by any quality custom leatherworker if you must have one. Plus, pancake holsters don't flop around like tom's threepersons or hip holsters.

Get one custom made for your gun, and that isn't going to be a problem.

Go with a generic off the rack one, and you'll be taking your chances.
