Okay, it has been a while since I have been online at THR, so the last two days I have been pilfering through old threads, and cannot seem to find my answer. So I will ask the experts on this one.

I have been to several different gun shops in the last few days, Looking for a new auto pistol, my last purchase was a Springfield XDM in 9mm, it is a great gun, but now I am looking at a 40/357 sig caliber handgun. I would prefer one that I can purchase, and then just buy the opposite caliber barrel to switch them in and out. For instance by the 40, and then buy the 357 sig barrel later. I know that this can be done with Sig, but what about the other auto's?

Secondly, I have narrowed my search to two pistols, one is a used H&K USP, in 40, very lightly used, feels good in the hands and looks nice; the other pistol is NIB Smith M&P also in 40. Both guns feel great in my hand, but they feel completely different at the same time. I was wanting your input on the two separate guns, obviously if H&K is good enough for SF, then it will withstand my needs, which is personal protection, range shooting, etc

I don't know with certainty but I believe that Glocks will interchange with replacement of the barrel and magazines (frame and slide the same). I am curious though, with prices on the rise and ammo in short supply why .357sig, why not stick with the common .40sw, especially since there are loads with compareable ballistics.

I agree, but I have a small stock-pile of some good SD/HD 357 sig ammo from a gun that I regrettably sold. Then, if/when I use that ammo up I still have the capability to use the 40 S&W.... Around my woods, it is hit and miss which one is in stock or on sale, with it being fired out of the same handgun, with virtually the same recoil, ballistics, etc it just leaves another option on the table.

That makes sense, if I had large stockpiles of ammo or even brass I'd definately want something with the right chamber to use it.

i have a sig p239 model of the decocker da/sa. was made a 40 and i have firestar bbls 357 conv 40 and 9mm conv 40; both ported. both use same mags and slide and bbl spring. 40 shoots POA the 9 3"low and the 357 3" below the 9mm. all 3 calibers function flawlessly and group beautifully. the 9mm loads one more in the mag also. diversity is good

Those are all good guns. You can't go wrong with any of them. BTW, .357 SIG is one of the FEW calibers I still see on shelves at gun stores...it may be a good idea to grab one.

I purchased a Glock 31 in .357 in a sweet deal. 1 year later purchased the Glock 22 barrel in .40 for 95.00 plus shipping.

drops in the Glock, uses the same magazines.

I took the .40 barrel and some jewelers rogue and polished the visible metal to a bright silver so I can tell at a glance what barrel is in the weapon.
