Note from Missouri Bullet Company

There is no mention of this on their Web Page, Brad has not commented in this thread, has anyone received a e mail from MB? I have not.????

Such a good company with a great product certainly there is a way around this? To be beaten down by success, sad, sad thing.

Ran a small business for many years, it is not easy.

Missouri Bullets produce excellent cast bullets and I'm glad to see them doing so well. I have had nothing but excellent service from them over the past year that I've been ordering from them.

I saw the traffic on facebook and checked the website. I haven't gotten an email from them either, but it may just be too soon. At least I hope that I'm one of those that are grandfathered in. I've made several orders with them in the past.

Nobody is going to understand when we say "Missouri Bullet Company fast" in reference to shipping times anymore.

I placed an order with Missouri Bullet Company tonight and every bullet I ordered had a 2 week backorder notation beside it. I ordered 105 TC and 125 TC.

Kinda saw this coming.

The last order of 2k took longer than usual, still fast but not as instantaneous as they once were.

Good product and good company

I just placed a single order and asked if I could be grandfathered in ... we'll see what happens. If not, I'll simply start looking at casting my own while shopping around for a similar vendor as I accumulate the required tooling & knowledge.

My last order of MBC bullets came from PV. I already had a order with them so shipping was cheaper & there price was the same as I get from Brad with my LEO discount. Seems ether way a great company gets my business, I get a great product, & it keeps a relationship between PV & MBC.

I don't know if I'll get grandfathered in or not but as long as I can get a decent price it doesn't matter. It is easier for the to just fill large orders & let someone else worry about retailing & shipping 1K at a time so count yourself lucky they care enough about the end user to not just cut them off & keep going after retailers.

In the past when something big was up Brad has always made a point of posting under his user name, Missouri Bullet Company. So far he has not done so, nor has he responded to this thread. In addition there has been no independent confirmation from anyone else.

Until Brad confirms this himself I would take it with a grain of salt. :uhoh:

OP came straight from MBC facebook page and it is very much confirmed. Many of our questions and comments are well discussed/answered on the facebook responses/comments by Brad - http://www.facebook.com/missouribullet

BTW, Brad goes by MissouriBullet on THR.
Missouri Bullet Company - A heads-up: We are on the verge of making a fundamental change in our business model and wanted to give you all some early information about it, as you have all been nice enough to have taken the time to come here to our company Facebook page and deserve to be the first to know. The problem is that business is good. Too good. We can't meet demand. As you know, we have wholesale customers that account for major purchases and both the quantities ordered and the volume ordered are increasing steadily for them. Meanwhile, the retail trade is mushrooming out of control. Today, for example, Jo Ann took approximately fifty telephone calls, all while she was trying to pack, ship, and size bullets. Yesterday, two trucks arrived for wholesale pickups and Jo Ann and myself had worked until 2:30 AM yesterday trying to complete the orders, while Mark worked all that night and then throughout the day yesterday before the trucks came. And this is killing us. We're not spring chickens any more and can't keep this up. And so we have tentatively decided that we are going to close the door to new retail (internet) trade and exclusively service only the wholesale customers and our existing customer base, which we be grandfathered in. We are going to kill the Blue Press advertisement ASAP and impliment an access code on the ordering portion of website, which will have been sent to our 14,000+ existing customers when we ready the move.

This is what happens when a company evolves to meet changing circumstances and we don't want to do it. Not making new sales is likely to cause me a heart attack but it's something we have to do.

Anyhow, I welcome your comments as we formulate our plans for the future.

Brad

Here are some more responses/comments from Brad on the facebook page:

Missouri Bullet Company - Made a decision tonight to terminate our Gunbroker business. All pending auctions have been terminated. Gunbroker couldn't provide hooks into our shopping cart, causing much extra work for Jo Ann

Sam Rebel - Add more employees, extra shifts, increase the size of your (new) buildings? If sales have increased to that degree take advantage of it and employ more of your fellow Americams...; )

Missouri Bullet Company - Sam, I addressed that very topic in post number nine, above. Now, if you could send me the employees that I can't seem to find around here, they would be welcome.

BTW, if you are serious about working for Brad, you can always download the employment application from the website, fill it out and send it to Brad (who knows, you just might be his next bullet caster ;)) - http://www.missouribullet.com/downloads/employment_application.pdf

I wonder if he still has that pile of sized lead he set aside for the future after my first order....

Might be time to find out !

I am on the side of Brad, while ya a person could expand and hire new employees etc...

That's the least costly portion of this.

What about having to buy more machinery?
It's difficult to get competent employees, but there isn't the monetary outlay aspect.

I only shoot jacketed, so don't pay that much attention to MBC, however... I imagine they are in the same boat as a lot of these other companies.

As a group we are too fickle in our buying patterns. Companies want to supply a steady rate of product. They don't want to be expanding to meet a panic level demand like in '09, only to be sitting around with a ton of excess capacity or inventory a year later. I don't know if that is a factor here, but after the last election cycle you can bet that fewer companies will be willing to make any kind of move to try to increase capacity during the next year. The panic will subside, and then they will not be operating at a high degree of efficency.

What large manufacturer of ANYTHING sells direct to an individual end user? Not many. Like just about any company that manufactures anything in quantity, the company I work for (electric meters) has minimum order sizes for a direct sale, not to mention we often have a 3-6 month backorder. We sell direct to large customers, and distributors, and smaller customers have to go through the distributors. The goal is to keep production at the flattest level possible, which makes for designing effecient operation around that level of production, which in turn leads to the lowest prices. Spiky demand = low effecency = higher prices.

Honestly I'm amazed they would even continue to sell to 14k individual accounts, most of which are probably buying 1k at a time. Most businesses in this situation would likely go to a distributor-only sales model, and have a flatter demand curve as a result.

I talked with Brad the other evening. The FB posting from the OP is accurate - business is so good, he's having to cut the retail side to keep up with the wholesale market. (The irony is somehow Powder Valley sells MBC for a lower price than MBC does, so it's not a horrible loss to the consumer.)

He told me the number of sales and bullets he's done already this year - over 1600 retail orders alone, not to mention the wholesale. I can't even recall how fast he's having to order truckloads of lead - he's melting and casting as fast as his machines can go.

As to the staff, they are very short - it's Brad, JoAnn, and two guys. He's advertised locally and has had exactly one - ONE - applicant. How can he hire help if help doesn't want to work for him? His 600 ft(2) shop is crowded with equipment, trying to let technology work where people won't. Physically, he just can't crank out any more bullets than the four of them are doing right now.

I don't want to over-speak for MBC, but they are happy as anything at the success they have achieved (and grateful to THR for their support), but they are struggling to maintain their level of service. Thus, the business decision to cut the retail side to maintain service to the vendors for a larger customer base.

I wish them luck in this change of plan.

Reading the facebook postings leading to the decision to "cap" the retail end of the business seems to warrant production capacity limit. Looks like Brad has the machinery, but just lacks the manpower to increase production.

If Brad can't find the work force, I think maybe it's time Brad offers "bullet casting internship" program to local high schools and colleges to "grow" his own workforce. Imagine doing a presentation to a group of high school seniors/college students ... Make your hobby your job and get a great workout as a fringe benefit of employment (Can you say "resistance workout"?). :D Learn metallurgy and see it in action. Employee discount on bullets and free use of company range. Any takers? <this is where Brad hands out applications for internship with waivers>

Just a thought to expand his potential employment options. :D By the time they complete the internship, Brad would have candidates already competent in all phases of production and he gets "pick of the litter". ;)

January 29 - Hard to believe, but 22 tons of fine Mayco alloy landed here just two weeks ago and it's already gone. Our lead stock is down to less than 40 tons now and it's time to order another truckload.

February 1 - 80k bullets cast yesterday, casting and sizing until 8:45 when it was time to quit and watch "Justified." A nice end to a busy day!

February 4 - Ready to start a killer of a weekend with 70k bullets still needed for the CAC (Pennsylvania distributor) truck pickup on Monday. No rest for the elderly around here, I'm afraid!

February 5 - Well, the weekend is over. Another 14 hour day and 70k bullets cast, and many many sized - but there are still 21 pans of raw bullets left on the floor ready for sizing now.

February 10 - Bullet Master #8 is up and operational, running .45 SoftBall! beyond count. And Jo Ann implemented the reorganization of the machine layout in the shop such that all sizers and casters are grouped together into separate areas, giving us more room and efficient placement. And we finalized a deal on an elderly Bullet Master Mk. II from a gentleman in Indiana, who is in the process of palletizing it for shipment back to Magma Engineering for a complete rebuild/upgrade which will bring it to the current Mk. VIII configuration. So, in a month or so, we will have nine modern casting machines and Jo Ann will have to find us some more space.

February 11 - Another big production Saturday is on tap. Caster #2 still awaits repair (should have the repaired melting pot on Monday) and #3 blew its motor on Thursday. But we will be running on the other six machines and making steady progress towards obliterating the backlog.

February 18 - The repairs on the lead pot for caster #2 were completed by a machine shop in Lee's Summit so we picked it up and will be getting that machine back into service this morning. And the replacement DC motor for #3 arrived in Harrisonville, so we picked that one up last night and will also get that machine going. Hopefully, by noon today we'll be back to full strength and running on all eight Mark 7's and 8's by noon.

February 21 - Speaking with Magma Engineering yesterday, I learned that the Bullet Master Mk. II that I purchased from the gentleman in Indiana had arrived for refurbishment. They're going to strip it to the frame and wheel, sandblast and paint it, and then fit it with every new Mk. VIII component and ship it to us in about a month. I'm looking forward to getting Bullet Master Mk. II/Serial #68 integrated into our stable of bullet machines and expect it to make a whale of a lot of bullets for our great customer base!

March 1 - Tough, tough day and we're exhausted. However, we were crafty enough to retain enough energy that we're going to drive to LongShotz in Strasburg for their signature 18 ounce ribeye steaks with a HUMONGO baked potato. And best of all, at my request, LongShotz is now stocking Samuel Adams Latitude 48 ale, which is, in my opinion, the best ale in the world.

March 7 - A heads-up: We are on the verge of making a fundamental change in our business model and wanted to give you all some early information about it, as you have all been nice enough to have taken the time to come here to our company Facebook page and deserve to be the first to know. FYI

I spoke with JoAnn yesterday. She answered the phone after 2-3 rings.

They have hired two more guys and are hoping to get the back log cleared up.

I do not consider a 2 week wait a problem for me after receiving their bullets pretty much the day after I ordered:)

If you have ordered before, you are "grandfathered".

Per Jo Ann: (hope I spelled that right)

Part of the problem is "new" reloaders who are not sure exactly what bullets they need or want and she spends a lot of time trying to get them the correct item. Then they receive what they ordered and decide that's not what the want:rolleyes:

Another is is the sense of panic (once again) due to election hype and fear.

This is just based on our brief conversation, so of course anything can change in the future.

They are one of the best companies I have ever dealt with (not just reloading stuff).

I haven't ordered in a while, so I hope to be "grandfathered in" as well. I suppose a smaller order through Powder Valley would make things a little easier on them though.

What's amazing about this thread, is this guy with the funkymonkey handle has posted this on 3 forums as his FIRST POST. All within 4 minutes! Why register just to place this business decision by MBC to limit it's sales? I'm well aware of copying something into the clipboard feature of a PC, then click paste on a forum post, but three forums in 4 minutes?!

I copied that from my post on the cast boolits forum. Another poster said this;

... and that he has posted this ONE TIME since joining 14 months ago

on another site, he joined in December of 2010 and made his "first post" today.

I sense a conspiracy here. Maybe it's just my suspicious nature, or it's the solar flare that caused it???¿:uhoh::scrutiny:

I know absolutely nothing about running a business, so I don't know if this was the right decision for Brad or not. I just hope he continues to prosper. One thing for sure, I'm glad I cast my own! :what:
That's why I asked if that was Brad making the post under a different name. The powder did sign the post Brad???
