Nothing Good Happens After Ten O'Clock

And SOMETIMES, folks are traveling and making tracks all day and need something from the C store or Waffle House like food, beer, soda, or whatever. From your post it sounds like you never go anywhere

That crime happens in the daytime does not mean that the risk of violent attack is not higher at night.
maybe, but when police response time is 20 minutes for a violent encounter 8am-7pm, and 2 minutes for any encounter outside those times it does explain why my region saw a drop in crime at night.

it became apparent to me that at about 10 PM the sewers open up and the vermin crawl out...if you're out of your home after 9 o clock at night your chances of being involved in a homicide sky rocket.

You sound like the mayor of my city. Last year, when crime was out of control after they made a bunch of felonies into misdemeanors in order to empty out the jails, he addressed a press conference by stating that people were safe as long as they didn't go out of their homes after midnight. Three days later, at 9 am on a Monday morning, a woman was robbed, pistol whipped, and beaten in broad daylight in a grocery store parking lot. That mayor got re-elected by the way.

On a lighter note, I agree with you. However, I'll also add that not only are there times you shouldn't go out, there also places you shouldn't go at any time. (In my town, that particular grocery store is one of them.) Seriously, I have a map of my city in my head with red zones in it. There is one particular main road that I just don't go north of almost ever. Once, my girlfriend absolutely insisted we go to the new business in a notoriously bad area. I finally relented. When we crossed a line on my mental map, I locked the truck doors. She thought I was paranoid. There is a McDonald's across the street from where we were. One hour after we were there, a man was shot several times while sitting in his car at the drive through. Broad daylight.

As John Corriea from ASP says: "Don't go to stupid places at stupid times with stupid people."

One of the reasons I go about my day disarmed is because I follow that rule.

Two minutes? Really? Counting from when to when?

Around here you won't even be through the phone tree and talking to a real human being in 2 minutes.

Starting to wonder just where a good deal of the posters to this thread reside. Crime ridden neighbor hoods it seems. Stats vary and are often skewed to reflect the author’s point of view. One I viewed was an index of 46.73 crimes per 100,000 population. An average nation wide in a population of +300 million. In my area I got a better chance of hitting the lottery.
As mentioned in other posts there are nearby cities with neighbor hoods I would not walk around in in broad daylight, my own local in my own neighbor hood, pretty safe , but’s there’s always that one off chance. Paranoia is it’s own demon. .

What are you trying to say that is relevant to the subject?

Your annual stat includes many people who do not frequent bars after 10:00 PM.

I used to stay up late but I found too many drunks driving on my side of the road when I would go some where. I decided to give up those activity's to try and stay alive. So now I go to bed at 8:00 pm. My property has perimeter alarms with motion detector lights, my house is alarmed and I am armed. I get good rest ,feel safe and found out nothing is going on that I'm interested in after that time. Plus I get to watch to sun rise and also found out that most people are sound asleep during the early hours. Peaceful.

Many pretty much do not. A lot of people are content to stay inside after the sun goes down. Certainly nothing wrong with that if that's your thing. Have been a night worker all my life I long ago got used to doing things differently. Now that I'm much older and slower not nearly much heading out late for anything unless it's work. It does make me sad that so many want to tell others that they are taking dumb risks because they want to run to the store in the middle of the night though. These are the people who have surrendered to the scum sadly and are the kind who are quick to blame a victim. It was their fault they enjoyed the freedom of being able to go to a store at 1am which is sad. Again though to each his own. I of course remember the days when every thing in town shut down at 9:00 except bars. Now because of the hours I keep I often end up in the late hours watching TV and such on days off. When I would be up and suddenly decide I needed a treat, I had zero problems heading to one of the stores that used to stay open 24 /7. ALWAYS carry of course and when I was at some store at 1:00am I am just as careful as I am if there at 1:00pm but, that may be more from the kind of work I have done for much of my life I guess. Again to each his own but, sad to see people tell others they should feel like a prisoner in their home due to the scum that are allowed to roam free now days:( I guess that's just the world we live in now.

We live in an "I want what I want" kind of culture. Have you noticed? Reasonable arguments don't matter. I reckon it comes from letting our kids play computer games until their brains turn to Cheez Whiz. Try telling anyone under 40 to settle down and see what you get.

Yeppers, I've known this for a long, long time.

In 1991, R.F. Laird published a book called "The Boomer Bible", the cover of which has one of those holographic images on it, the kind where you tilt it and the image changes. The image on the book is of a hand opening and closing...as in "gimmie-gimmie".

Very apropos of more than just the newest generation.

(By the way...The Boomer Bible is HILARIOUS.)

Avoid trouble as best you can.

Being out late at night or very early morning in many places is less safe than other hours of the day.

I generally try to be inside from about 10 pm until 6 am. I don't find that especially hard to do since most of that time I am asleep anyway.

It's a little different if you work late or find that it is necessary or convenient to be out when it is dark. You need to pick the spots to go to that are likely to be less of a problem.

Man if that is not ever right on the money!! This is what scares hell out of me about the US. We have raised so many people to believe that anything they need, food, shelter, ect, is "owed" them that if that magic free money ever stops? We will see massive riots from people who have no clue how to fend for themselves or work.

How does your state handle walking in with a gun past the sign? I had forgotten my doctors office has a no gun sign. I have never paid attention to the thing so forgot it was even there. Here if I pull it out and tell them I have it, or pass out and they find it, they "could" tell me to never come back. So no big deal to me. It's why I forgot the sign was even there.
Now if the state changed it to where if I passed out and they found the gun meant I would wake up in jail? I guess I would do what I do when it go the the office to renew my permit, leave it in the car. Since there they don't just put up a sign they walk you through a metal detector. Any place that wants to sell me something though and puts a sign out saying they don't want my gun is telling me they don't want my money.

This is a good question, and one we must all be conscience of as people who carry (concealed or otherwise).

Be aware of the jurisdictional laws, especially when you travel as they will vary from place to place. DO NOT violate the law. We do have a choice in the matter, if for no other reason than we simple avoid going to places where such signs are posted.

As for any (private business) place that may put such a sign out...remember, this is the right of private citizens to make this decision, including with their businesses. It's not that "they don't want [your] money", either, because of course they do. It's more of an "I don't want to give you my money".

We make these decisions all the time for a variety of reasons. Maybe we don't buy from (company) because they carry products from certain countries. Maybe we buy our computers from (company) because we've always had outstanding customer service from them. Maybe we don't invest in certain companies in the stock market because they have ties with (abortion, political affiliation, etc.).

In many cases, such signs are not out of any sense of animosity at all...it may simply be a corporate thing that doesn't reflect the local business attitude.

Stupid places.
Stupid times.
Stupid people.
Stupid things.

I try, as hard as I can, to avoid all of them.
I have to work with the "public" and a lot of that public is dopers. So sadly my work is filled with interactions with stupid people. Hardly ever drink any more but man oh man. Some mornings when I come home I need a stiff one to forget the crap from the night before

If it was up to me private business would be allowed to do as they please and it would be fine with me. I quite smoking LONG before it became the "thing" it is now. When the "we want to tell you how to live" law makers started telling business they had to ban smoking I thought it was stupid. The people who pay out the butt for the right to run a business should be able to let in who they want. Of course that's not going to happen <shrug>. For me matters not if it's "corporate" or some owner who says he does not want my gun in his store. I have no problem not giving him my money. I certainly feel they have every right to tell me to go elsewhere. I love freedom.

Didn't answer my question, Alex - will you give your money to a medical institution that bans carry. How do you feel about an OC only ban?

The smoking bans were because smoke hurts people. People have to go to stores to function in society. Why should they have to have their health impaired by some smoker? There may not be another convenient venue nearby. So tough noogies to the smokers.

How do you feel about law makers telling you, you can't sit on your lawn naked to watch the school bus drop off kids?

That's freedom, isn't it?

Just to add to this thread, I believe it to be beneficial to gas up at locations that do not have a store available to rob (Sams Club, Costco, etc).

If you can remove yourself from as many possible bad interactions the better you will be.

IF you are gassing up when their [pumps are open; but I think the main gist of this thread is things going south at night. If I am traveling and I need gas in an unfamiliar spot, I will wait until the morning when most evil-doers are asleep, or hit a busy, well-lit truckstop or similar.

Well, you for sure got one thing right. The stuff that you get from The Waffle House is LIKE food. Not it is food it's just like food.

There is a Shell about a block from my house. I 've always had good luck with their gas. So when I need gas I generally stop there on my way home from work which is about 7:30 in the morning.
