ok, so here's what i carry:
---Inova X-1 flashlight. nylon holster, 10-11 o clock on belt
---watch, on belt loop, about 11 o-clock
---main knife (Benchmade 551, in for resharpening, has been away for a disgustingly long time. lets just say i have it for ease of everything). in front right pocket, clipped in. tip-up carry. satin blade, plain edge.
---backup knife (CRKT point guard. smaller one. 2.75" blade) i carry this clipped to my belt, about 4 o-clock, with the tip pointing up, so if it was pulled down, it would be unclipped from my belt. satin/beadblasted blade, straight edge.
---zippo. this is in a leather pouch, about 3 o-clock. no, i don't smoke.
---back-backup knife. Camillus Sizzle. assisted opening, but the small size makes it a tad difficult to deploy fast. black blade, half serrated. clipped in a beltloop, about 1 or 2 o clock. the tip-down clip makes it so when i clip it on, the tip is pointing to my right.

ok, that being said, i wear a trenchcoat in the winter. black, a few inches below my knee, somewhat heavy. usually buttoned up and belted (since it's cold and all...)

the coat has two inside pockets. one is around waist level and not vary secure or quickly assessable. the other is more or less standard, with a vertical pocket slit.

sorry this is somewhat long... but, with all this being said, what is my best option here for winter? i suppose i could switch my knife/knives to different pockets when i put the coat on - it's not like i'm CCW'ing a 1911 (yet. :D ) so i can take them out of my pocket and move 'em around....

hope this helps other poeple too who have the same dilemma.

First tell me, why do you have a back up knife? Are you expecting your primary knife to malfunction? ;)

I don't like knives in coat pockets. Too likely to fall out.

You carry a back knife for a few reasons
a) for situations that require more than a single knife
b) If you are disarmed, you still have 1 or in TMM case two knives that you can draw
c) To arm a friend who happens to be missing a knife
d) If there are multiple atackers and you get your knife stuck in one the attackers ribcages.

well said, NFL. :D

"if you get one of your knifes stuck in you attackers ribcages..."

that makes me laugh... hehe...

oh, and i would be clipping my knives in the coat inside pocket, not just dropping them in there.

oh, and my back up knife (CRKT) i usually use as a yawara stick because it fits really well in my hand and has a rather pointy end. i also use it as i grub knife where my main blade would be dulled or scratched easily. i'm carrying the Camillus because :
1) i'm testing it to see how well it works/keeps it edge/etc
2) it has serrations for cutting line, rope, etc.

Well, maybe you should think about dressing around your carry items, instead of trying to make your carry items work with your current mode of dress.

Many jackets have both snaps and zippers. If you use the snaps instead of the zippers, exposing your waistline can be accomplished in a single ripping action.

I do not like to wear clothing that slows me up.

Long coats fall in that category.

You might look at other clothing options, and solve your accessability problems in one fell swoop.

If you want to carry multiples of an item you might consider having the other one on your off side where you can get at it with your other hand.

i won't be changing my coat - i love that thing. it keeps my legs warm too, and prevents alot of air from coming up the waistline. and it looks cool as hell.

as to acessing a back-up with my offhand, that will be unnecesary, because if i want another knife, i'll just grab it out and give it to a friend in need of it, or i'd put away my other one and replace it with a different one. a knife in eack hand is bad for defence. too much to keep contol of.

silverlance- do you have problem with somebody who wishes to be prepared, if not then why the namecalling.

i agree with andrew, lose the trenchcoat. do you want to look cool or protect yourself? i assume you gear up after school. i don't really have any good ideas for access to your SD equipment, but, i have some advice for you. get yourself a good sharpening stone or a nice diamond dust shapening steel and practice shapening your own kinves. then you won't have to send them out for resharpening. i too have a backup knife and see nothing wrong with having one. i keep one strictly tactical (never dulled and will shave hair at any given time), and one more as a working blade.

yeah, you're definitely missing a few key items...magnetic grappling hook gun with 300yds of line, goose calls, bottle opener, tire pump, Sharpie, etc etc:p

THAT's what I told him, heck I'd even doit for free.

if you carry everything on your belt
just cut the inside pocket on your jacket (neatly of coarse) the one at waist line so you can get to your belt and all your stuff
