The pistols are packed in the shooting box along with the ammo but there has been a lot of rain this month on the east coast and our range is prone to flooding. This makes it hard to concentrate ( and really tough to pick up the brass). I'm still trying. Quantrill

Hopefully Friday. I tried it last week, but it was extremely windy, and a couple of my chosen guns' sights were also off. So, the day was spent waiting for the wind to die down, then sighting in guns. Then I was out of ammo...

I sure hope the range is open tomorrow...

To paraphrase one of my favorite lines from the movie Erin Brockovich, speaking to myself:

Did they teach you how to 'shoot one handed' at engineering school? 'Cause you suck at it.

Well, I finally got out to the range and it was underwater from 25 yards to the target line. I inched my way along the side of the range until I got to the 50 foot line and got my two grandchildren to stand up on the pile of earth to catch brass and did my thing. Here is the result: All centerfire bullets cast by myself from scrap plus linotype lead// Class - Improved

Completely stock except for the target grips - iron sights 100pts - 8X

Here is an image of my targets and the guns used, for documentation if nothing else. (Not that it is anything great - especially those holes trying to hide under the trigger guards of the M41 and Colt :D ).

I thought I would have done significantly better with the .22 than I did. It appears the weak link in this system is obvious - me!

Where are all the other entries? Did everyone wait until this weekend to go to the range?

Rojo didn't do too well. This one was tough.

I don't shoot handguns with one hand darn it!

El Rojo - thanks for sharing your results. It certainly make me feel better about my scores.

Apparently the secret is to shoot over a large pool of water based on the results Quantrill reported. I'll have to try that sometime. :D

Pool was frozen today. Not hard enough to walk on. I think it was trying to sucker me into stepping on it and falling through.. Instead, I inched my way up to the 50 foot mark again (I could tell where that was by the frozen footprints I had made this past weekend), and tried out a new (to me) S&W #544, an "N" frame in cal. 44-40. I lasted all of 17 rounds before succumbing to the cold. But I think the conditions of shooting over water hold true over ice as well (if you can tolerate the cold). (smile) Quantrill

sorry folks,,,

too hectic of a month to shoot this one,,,just couldn't put the time for it together,,,i did shoot some nra matches though...

can i submit my official yd timed fire 25 yard score that was a 100 -7x??

first 100 ever in competition,,,whupped everybody,,,too bad the rest of my targets for that match weren't quite as good, they were ok,,,

i did win a whopping $7.50 with it though,,,

:D

Back in the late 1960s, I was lucky enough to be sent to Camp Perry's Police Firearm Instructor school. One of the instructors was Bill Jordan of Border Patrol fame. One of the things that he said that stuck with me all these years is, "Bullseye shooting is the basis of all other diciplines. If you can shoot good Bullseye matches, you can do well with anything else. There is no way to 'beat" a bullseye". I have found that to be true. Quantrill

I guess training from Bill Jordan at Camp Perry is fairly worthwhile! :D

Quantrill scores a whopping 300 - 20X this month to win the Improved class. Somehow I think it's not just Quantrill's nice guns. ;)

Quantrill also wins the overall for this month. I will post his targets -- something to which we can all aspire (as well as having grandkids pick up brass -- outstanding!!!!)

Deputy Vaughn wins the Standard class with an impressive 292-13X.

Photo Guy wins the respectable Hardball class with an also-impressive 280-5X.

Not a whole lot of entries this month. I couldn't get out shooting this month. I think that was the fastest November I can recall. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Here are all the scores -- nice shooting everyone once again!

Wow, I thought I sucked at one handed shooting yet I ended up on top of the hardball group. Obviously the really good shooters went with other categories or were on vacation this month.

El Rojo, sounds like you shot the match correctly. I think you will redeem yourself this month as I suspect you are more of a rifleman than pistol shooter. (I am the opposite).

Aside from the difficulty shooting one-handed in last months contest I also had trouble with the targets. Using a large target designed for 50 yrds at 50 ft meant that my sighting needed to be adjusted. My guns are normally sighted for a 6 o'clock hold on a target that is about 2-3 inches in diameter at 50 feet. If I used a 6 o'clock sight picture on the larger contest targets I would be an inch or too low. However, adjusting to a more centered sight picture made getting a good sight alignment more difficult with the black on black of my sights on the target. I didn't want to adjust the sites for the contest (and couldn't on my 1911) so I did the best I could.

Perhaps you had a similar problem?

In my case I know it was *not* my guns. All three targets show about the same variation in shot placement. The variation is much larger than I have seen these same guns do from rest or with a good 2-hand hold. The variation obviously is due to operator error.:)
