I thought cocked and locked is condition 1. Uncocked and chamber loaded is 2, unloaded chamber with loaded mag inside is 3, and unloaded plus mag out is 4. Here's a page where a guy already got a couple of XDs asking question whether Xd's grip safety would make it safer than a DA revolver(I think it would, in theory at least. Since just pulling the trigger without the grip safety properly depressed, no matter how hard you pull you can't fire the gun, but may damage the internals. On a DA revolver, it'll go bang). The "expert" here gave a rundown of the 1911 "condition"s(an XD can't have any other condition but 0, as it's cocked but unlocked, with a grip safety yet it's still safer than a Glock. The trigger pull is designed to be longish and heavish to mimic that of a DA pistol). He said:

Keeping a round in the chamber but not cocked is called condition 2. When also cocked, it is condition 3 (also called cocked and locked). Condition 3 is considered safe by most experts when used with a 1911 style gun (one with a lever safety and also a grip safety). Condition 2, with a round in the chamber but not cocked, is normally not recommended, because an accidental discharge is possible if it is dropped to sufficiently move the hammer back and then the hammer falls onto the firing pin.

I'm not too familiar with the operation of 1911 pistols.

How can you have a loaded chamber in a 1911 with the hammer down?
Doesnt racking the slide to chamber a round cock the hammer?
To lower the hammer, wouldnt you have to then pull the trigger and ease the hammer down?
Is this generally considered unsafe?
