By comparison, Mr. Thompson’s relationship with gun-rights groups is sterling. A 2000 report from a campaign-finance watchdog group, Common Cause, found that the NRA, Gun Owners of America, and the Georgia Gun Owners PAC donated $188,954 to Mr. Thompson between 1993 and 1999; the groups donated more only to Dr. Frist. (Mr. Thompson was elected in a special election in 1994.)
Despite often supporting Republican candidates, the NRA insists it is an issue-based organization and not a partisan one. In recent years, the group has endorsed several Democrats, including Governor Bredesen of Tennessee, Governor Easley of North Carolina, and Rep. Marion Berry of Arkansas.

Nonetheless, the endorsement of the NRA Political Victory Fund has correlated with every Republican presidential victory since 1980. In 1992 and 1996, the organization declined to endorse a candidate. After the 2000 election, President Clinton contended in an interview that NRA opposition cost Vice President Gore New Hampshire, Arkansas, and perhaps Tennessee and Missouri.

SoCal-

You didn't get the memo.

Ron Paul is the only candidate for whom it is moral to vote.

Every other candidate is worse than Stalin.

It's far better to vote for Hillary Clinton than even a pro-gun candidate other than Ron Paul, because Hillary Clinton will protect our rights.

Get with the [strike]pogrom[/strike] program!

Dang.

I can't start a thread on this topic without it getting hijacked. :(

The whole thing is starting to make me mad. :fire:

Shall we attempt at keeping it on topic? Does anyone think that GOA or the NRA would go for this guy, as opposed to others? It looks like they have a strong history of supporting him in the past. And would such support hurt him or help him in the broader scope of things?

How dare the NRA back a Pro 2A candidate that folks will actually vote for.

LOL

That's the sort of compromise we just can't have the NRA accepting. They should take our membership dues and then go and make sure they have no impact whatsoever on preserving our gun rights. That's just the right thing to do.

Ok, there's a lot of whining about Ron Paul bashing, and I think there'd be a lot less if there weren't as much Ron Paul cheerleading. Nature always tends toward balance.

There are quite a few Republican candidates out there right now going into the primaries. Fred Thompson will announce, he's just waiting for the chaff to settle. In the past, candidates sometimes didn't announce until November of the year prior to election year.

To be honest, I could vote for Mr. Paul in the General Election if he gets the nod. I suspect there are a fair number of Paul supporters that would vote for Thompson in the reverse situation. I just feel that Fred Thompson fits my personal political opinion a little better than Ron Paul. Both Paul and Thompson are pretty solid on gun rights.

It would help if Ron Paul supporters would ease off the rhetoric a bit. You know, stuff like "if you don't support Ron Paul you are a communist" or "a socialist" or "you hate freedom" or "you don't believe in the constitution". There are no absolutes in this world and Ron Paul is, at the end of the day, another politician.

BTW the NRA would not be expected to back Paul over Thompson, because Paul voted against the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.

You don't get an NRA endorsement at this stage of the game when you opposed one of the NRA's significant legislative goals of the decade, and when a candidate with an earned A rating outpolls you 10:1 anyway.

There isn't an issue advocacy group, left, right or center, that would do that.

All I have to say is that Ron Paul introduced a progun bill that would reappeal many gun laws. I would suggest that the NRA sponsor the man who would willfully go against the majority and ask for our rights back.

So is Fred Thompson running or not?

+1 on SPECTRE's comment that all the bashing is a result of all the cheerleading.

Either way, the majority of us here on THR are conservatives or libertarians. I am a conservative, therefore Fred Thompson appeals to me more than Ron Paul. Honestly, they're both very solid on gun rights. If EITHER one gets the Oval Office, we all win. Why? Because this is a forum about gun rights. Not economic policy, not campaign reform, etc. The ONE thing that brings us all together is our passion for the 2nd Amendment, so we must cheer them both on (note: cheering them on and supporting their campaign are seperate, I will cheer Ron Paul and Fred Thompson on as much as I can, but I'll support Thompson's campaign) along with all the other 2nd Amendment-friendly candidates.

We can all disagree on the other issues, but let's not get angry with each other! Let's not accuse eachother of being commies! We all must hang together or we all will hang seperately... or something like that.^^b

Anyway the NRA and GOA will endorse either one of them, assuming one of them gets the nomination.

Sigh.

I wanted to leave this open, I really did.

You called the man "Ru Paul." And that really wasn't the worst of it. The pointlessness of bickering about which THR member hates America the most is the worst.
