If Paul is not chosen and Thompson were, he would be a better canidate than any other...other than Paul.

It's far better to vote for Hillary Clinton than even a pro-gun candidate other than Ron Paul, because Hillary Clinton will protect our rights.

The whole thing is starting to make me mad.
Shall we attempt at keeping it on topic? Does anyone think that GOA or the NRA would go for this guy, as opposed to others? It looks like they have a strong history of supporting him in the past. And would such support hurt him or help him in the broader scope of things?

Ok, there's a lot of whining about Ron Paul bashing, and I think there'd be a lot less if there weren't as much Ron Paul cheerleading. Nature always tends toward balance.
There are quite a few Republican candidates out there right now going into the primaries. Fred Thompson will announce, he's just waiting for the chaff to settle. In the past, candidates sometimes didn't announce until November of the year prior to election year.
To be honest, I could vote for Mr. Paul in the General Election if he gets the nod. I suspect there are a fair number of Paul supporters that would vote for Thompson in the reverse situation. I just feel that Fred Thompson fits my personal political opinion a little better than Ron Paul. Both Paul and Thompson are pretty solid on gun rights.
It would help if Ron Paul supporters would ease off the rhetoric a bit. You know, stuff like "if you don't support Ron Paul you are a communist" or "a socialist" or "you hate freedom" or "you don't believe in the constitution". There are no absolutes in this world and Ron Paul is, at the end of the day, another politician.

BTW the NRA would not be expected to back Paul over Thompson, because Paul voted against the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.
You don't get an NRA endorsement at this stage of the game when you opposed one of the NRA's significant legislative goals of the decade, and when a candidate with an earned A rating outpolls you 10:1 anyway.
There isn't an issue advocacy group, left, right or center, that would do that.

All I have to say is that Ron Paul introduced a progun bill that would reappeal many gun laws. I would suggest that the NRA sponsor the man who would willfully go against the majority and ask for our rights back.

+1 on SPECTRE's comment that all the bashing is a result of all the cheerleading.
Either way, the majority of us here on THR are conservatives or libertarians. I am a conservative, therefore Fred Thompson appeals to me more than Ron Paul. Honestly, they're both very solid on gun rights. If EITHER one gets the Oval Office, we all win. Why? Because this is a forum about gun rights. Not economic policy, not campaign reform, etc. The ONE thing that brings us all together is our passion for the 2nd Amendment, so we must cheer them both on (note: cheering them on and supporting their campaign are seperate, I will cheer Ron Paul and Fred Thompson on as much as I can, but I'll support Thompson's campaign) along with all the other 2nd Amendment-friendly candidates.
We can all disagree on the other issues, but let's not get angry with each other! Let's not accuse eachother of being commies! We all must hang together or we all will hang seperately... or something like that.^^b
