LIke many conservatives who are 2A supporters I have been more than a bit dissasatisfied with the poll leaders in the Republican presidential race, but Fred Thompson, former senator from Tennessee and well known actor is getting my hopes up. For those on this forum who don't know his 2A position, Sen. Thompson was very pro-gun while in the Senate, and Charlton Heston campaigned for him when he ran for re-election. He just might be the answer to conservatives who want to back a candidate who could actually win the presidency. From some items on blogs on the internet it seems that some Dems are really afraid of this guy, which has to be a good thing!

Actually, Fred Thompson has had my interest for some time now.

He's a very smart guy and he's doing the right thing by letting the campaigns move along right now. Hopefully, he will sense the vacuum of conservatism and leadership in the candidates and decide to step in.

There is no doubt in my mind he could be the next Ronald Reagan.

From what I read about Thompson he's a careful and deliberate politico. He could easily get the Republican nomination so I think the deciding factor will be the votes he can siphon off of the Democrat candidate in 2008. I hope he's on the ticket for '08 since all the likely alternatives are :barf:

Thompson hasn't officially announced that he's going to run in 2008

but here are what the poles say

1. Newt Gingrich 16.39%
2. Rudy Giuliani 12.09%
3. Mike Huckabee 1.28%
4. Sec. of State Condi Rice 4.20%
5. Sen. Sam Brownback 1.84%
6. Sen. Fred Thompson 54.42% ( Wow!)
7. Sen. John McCain 1.76%
8. Gov. Mitt Romney 8.02%

Add me to the list of people that wish Thompson would run. Everything I've read about him I've liked.

Let's see how primary season shapes up....I'm still of the opinion that our next president has not announced their candidacy.

So far the only Republican that I would support is Fred Thompson. The only Democrat I would vote for would be Jim Webb, but I think he is happy as my junior senator.

We got the current joker as president because he wasn't <insert candidate of choice> We hoped he would be better in spite of ample evidence that he was not a conservative and that he had an inexplicable affection for Mexicans. The results of our "hope" is an unmitigated disaster of a president; a man who would have been impeached over his conduct of border protection had it not been for a war in Iraq.

So here we are again. Looking for someone who ain't a Bush. We looking for someone with a conservative ideology and looks like he could string together three sentences without stumbling. Sorry, but I will wait for an analysis of his record while in congress and an accounting of his positions since leaving the DC septic tank. I am sick of supporting people for president because they ain't someone else. Maybe just one more time before I depart this world I will be able to vote FOR a candidate instead of voting AGAINST the other candidate.

There is another one for all Fred fans:

Thompson debuts at 10% in new NH poll

Friday, Mar. 23, 2007

Manchester – A new poll of New Hampshire voters suggests that Fred Thompson might undermine Republican front-runner Rudy Giuliani.

The American Research Group March 19 to 21 telephone poll of 800 likely GOP primary voters included several possible candidates who have not announced their plans.

In a February poll, Giuliani led the field with 27 percent, one point ahead of John McCain. In March, Giuliani slipped to 19 percent, four points behind McCain. Mitt Romney was supported by 17 percent.

Next in line were two unannounced candidates, Newt Gingrich at 11 percent and Thompson, who had not been part of earlier surveys, at 10 percent.

The matching Democratic survey showed little change from February. Hillary Clinton led the field with 37 percent, followed by Barack Obama at 23 percent and John Edwards at 20 percent. Al Gore was not included in the poll.

For more details, visit the American Research Group site.
