NRA backs Santorum

Who are the polls predicting is leading in that race?

If Santorum may actually lose to Casey, then the Republicans are in worse shape that I thought. I watched their debates, and Casey clearly has no plan to get us out of any of the messes Bush has gotten us into.

The problem with Santorum is he has towed the Bush party line to closely, and is now going to have to pay. Its hard to get away from your record when you have supported a very unpopular president that much. I hope he wins, though.

My impression of Casey is that he is simply lazy and is running on his father's name. I like representatives that work.

Pennsylvania is slowly getting more liberal. The candidates they elect for the most part reflect this.

Rick Santorum's main problem is he sponsored the PAWS Act.

If he had not done that, he would be a better position.

Google Paws Act to find out more.

I will not post it here because it is not gun related.

No other Democrat does, either, and it doesn't seem to figure into the polling one way or another.

This will be a strange election, no matter what the outcome.

If the Democrats win big, it will be without a coherent plan or message other than "we hate Bush!" They haven't given us any real positive reason to vote for them, or shown indications that they're really ready to lead again.

If the Republicans win at all, it will be contrary to a lot of poll data. What's at stake, really, is, "Will the GOP base stay home?" There is little chance that committed Republicans of any stripe will vote for the current Democrats. Swing voters, if they actually exist, will decide this for the Democrats if GOP loyalists stay home, or if they vote Libertarian or somesuch as a protest.

We already have the rare situation where economic indicators are extremely positive, and the incumbent party doesn't get any boost from them.

Actually, I find that somewhat refreshing. The economy is obviously important, and everyone wants to make more money. But other issues than our current financial situation are important for future generations. I am glad to see that people aren't simply going along with what the Republicans have been doing just because the economy is strong.

Maybe we aren't the whores for money that some would think we are.

Unfortunately, by protesting the disaster that has been handed to us by Republicans, we will end up electing Democrats, who will only make matters worse.

Oh well, we are screwed. Where's the reset button?

the disaster that has been handed to us by Republicans

Now I, for one, don't see the disaster. I don't like some things, I'm okay with some, I'm disappointed with some, and I do like some. They might be VERY different from your list.

Your calling it a disaster doesn't make it so, no matter how many times you do.

So, what is the disaster? And how are we "screwed" any more than we've been in my lifetime of 40 years, and how is this the exclusive fault of the Republicans? I remember much screwedness during that lifetime, and much of it seemed a lot more screwed.

How will anyone else "make it better?"

ArmedBear, I am not going to list the problems I have with the current Neo-Conservatives in control of the Republican Party. Its the usual things that you see hashed over endlessly here. I realized we had a problem when they passed Campaign Finance Reform, and Medicare Reform was the final nail in the coffin. Other things too, but I am just worn out with complaining.

Suffice it to say that until Bush was elected, I had voted straight Republican. I even voted for him twice and have donated money to Republicans and was in the RNC for what that's worth.

I am through with them though until they change there ways and get back to the principals of small government, limited bureaucracy, less invasive government, fiscal conservatism, and get real on national defense.

I would rather the Democrats ruin our country than the Republicans.

22 rimfire

You say pa is becoming more libral. We already are. With about 37% of the state budget going to welfare. And it will only get worse because of the welfare recips in pitt and philly. The population in those two citys is so high they carry a the person running right to office. The representitives of this state see everyone between pitt and philly as people who should support those two cities and that is it. The opinion outside of those to cities means nothing. I think the futre of this state is bleek :( at best.

No kidding. Let’s boot out the neocons and social conservatives and hope a new crop of true RKBA libertarian minded Republicans show up at the next election. It’s hard to believe that with the current batch of Republicans we’ve lost more civil rights than when the Dems were in charge.

I think, unfortunately, most people will be voting strictly as a referendum on Iraq. Not that the Democrats would accomplish anything more, but it will be a vote against Iraq. Outside of that main issue, the economy is strong, stock market at an all time high, gas prices are low, we haven't had a terrorist attack in 5+ years, mortage rates are low, gun rights are better, unemployment is near an all time low, home ownership is soaring etc...so what exactly does a change mean-----out of Iraq, less safe, higher taxes, higher mortgage rates, and more gun restrictions. Is that really worth losing to send a statement to Bush?

If the core of the Republican party fails to turn out in good numbers it will send the message to party leadership that at least some of the following (all of which Bush apparently supports) is unacceptable:

Campaign Finance Reform
Medicare Reform
No Child Left Behind
Open Borders/Amnesty
Neverending War in Iraq
Patriot Act
Military Commissions Act
Expanded federal bureaucracy
Increased federal spending

Core Republicans won't vote Democrat; they probably just won't vote. I think the Democrats will, as a result, take the House, and may very well take the Senate.

Not to nitpick, but...

gas prices are low

Huh? At anywhere from a dollar to two dollars more per gallon than six years ago? Name one other commodity that had it's price nearly tripled in the last six years.
home ownership is soaring

I'm a contractor. I work for all the local homebuilders. Our workload is just about half what it was two years ago. The homebuilders are cutting staff, downsizing home floor plans, and still not building homes.

Economists can play the numbers games all they want, and tell me I've got roses coming out my...

Down in the trenches, it's a different story. The upcoming election is going to change Congress, because the people just don't believe anything the current administration is telling them. The only thing the RNC has to sell is the fear that if the DNC takes control, things will get even worse. At least, that's what all the political mailings I get say.

Rick Santorum's main problem is he sponsored the PAWS Act.

I never even heard of this until I read it in this thread. I am really irritated with Santorum for a number of things, but chiefly selling out to the liberal wing of the Republican party by torpedoing Pat Toomey with his support for Arlen Specter, who IMO is not much better than Ted Kennedy where his politics are concerned. In years past Santorum seemed to be a principled man, but it seems that he has now become the calculating politician along with his buddy Bush.

I voted for Bush twice too, and I really regret that we had no better choice. But I am sick to death of hearing the Republicans say we have to vote for these guys because we have no where else to go. You know what I do when I don't have somewhere to go? I stay home.

Not exactly. I haven't missed an election in years except for illness once or twice. I just won't pull a lever for either Santorum or Casey. I know all the arguments about how we need to stop the libs and so on and so forth. Santorum is touted as a friend to gunnies, but then he helps people like Specter get elected, who is definitely an enemy to us, and on many other things besides. So what is he really?

I see the same thing with people who are truly reptiles, with no morals or ethics. They can backstab, undercut, and generally behave in a terrible fashion, but as long as they smile to your face and act in a charming manner, people label the person as "a nice guy". No, he is not a nice guy, even if he acts like one to your face. The totality of his behavior needs to be taken into account.

I know there are going to be a lot who disagree with me, but we are not going to break the cycle until we stop giving people like this a pass.

I don't care except that gun owners need to vote.

Staying home is not an option.

If the Republicans win, there will be crying, whining, and accusations and lawsuits from all over the left. No doubt about it.

Staying home is not an option, but picking the lesser of two evils is the problem.

How can I support a candidate who will work for my gun rights (as if!) while also leaving the gays, poor people, and other Republican "undesirables" alone? I can't, because there is no such candidate.

Since when have Republicans declared 'war' on poor people??

The republicans certainly have not declared war on the poor; in fact, welfare spending is at an all time high, and we have now expanded Medicare massively because of the new drug welfare program.

Of course, this is not what a small government, fiscally conservative party should do, but thats not the point.

I am through with them though until they change there ways and get back to the principals of small government, limited bureaucracy, less invasive government, fiscal conservatism, and get real on national defense.

What a relief. Thank you. Forgive me if I can't remember which people here are upset with the Republicans over things like SWIFT, which is, of course, the end of the world as we know it, and a RADICAL change from any sort of intelligence gathering that we've ever done before. At least before 1879, anyway.:p

I'm with you on your list.

I would rather the Democrats ruin our country than the Republicans.

I'm not sure that's productive, but I have no brilliant alternative ideas in the short term.

I guess I hope that the Republicans, if voted out, will actually improve. It hasn't worked for the Democrats this time around. It did work for the GOP when Carter was in office, though. We'll see.

I'm not sure I wish another Carter on my beloved country.

In my own personal "worst case scenario" I've already been giving the Democrats both the Pennsylvania and Rhode Island elections. Even after that, I still have a hard time seeing how they are going to end up with 51 Senators. It could happen (obviously) but the smart money would argue against it. Ultimately every race has its own local dynamics.

I'm still betting the GOP will lose the House but retain the Senate.

Gregg
