I know there are hundreds of insurance threads about firearms, lots of them specifically relating to the NRA insurance. But my question relates to if anyone has actually had to make a claim to the NRA, and what kind of a process they went through to get their firearm replaced. Things may include what kind of documentation was needed, how long it took to get their check, how much of a hassle it was, etc.

I have most of my guns on a rider on my homeowners but figured the $2500 given by the NRA would be a way to replace a few if needed but I'm not sure what all it would take to get the situation resolved.

I'm bumping this thread because I have also wondered how the NRA plan works if you ever make a claim.

Anyone ever used it?

I lost about $7500 in pistols to a home burglary on Feb 20, this year. My homeowner's policy only covers $3000 in guns and gun related items. I have contacted the NRA insurer, but will have to wait on a settlement from the HO policy, before I can file. I have the paperwork completed and will let you know how it works out. If they are reasonable to deal with, I plan to buy a $10,000 policy from the company as it's only $104 per year.

Someone on here posted once about a gun stolen from their car that the NRA insurance covered. They gave the impression it went without a hitch.

Thanks Viper, keep us posted!

Please do keep us posted. I had a theft a few years back, not much valuable so I didn't file on my homeowners. I thought about the NRA insurance but it states you must have receipts from purchase, and all these guns were really old ones I bought back in the 60's, just plinkers, and of course no receipts, so they weren't in a safe. Never did file.

Question for Viper

Sorry about your loss in your guns. Would you be so kind as to let us know how you had your firearms stored? We're they in a gun safe or other? Do you have other layers of security? Motion lights, alarm, deadbolts, etc.? Do you think it was a smash and grab, kids, professionals?

If you don't wish to comment on the above I can totally understand. Just curious so that others like myself can learn how to better protect.

This thread is a reminder for me to get my wife's jewelry locked up and for me to look into more insurance.

I got a rider on my renters for ALL the guns, changes every time I add or delete a firearm. Costs about $40 a month.
Regardless, I do what I can to keep them safe - the thought of one of mine in criminal hands is enough to blow steam.

It's been a few weeks; heard anything Viper? Still waiting on your HO insurance company to make up their mind?

On sale for $299.99 at Dick's Sporting Goods this week (I bought one):

Holds 19 guns and weighs over 250 lbs. Should discourage most burglars.

I think our opinion on a 'good safe' differs a bit.

Sticking to the OP, I'm still interested on how this works with the NRA

That is at best a gun cabinet. Two guys with crowbars could have that in minutes. One guy with a crowbar could have it open just as fast. They wouldnt have to take it, the can just break in.

I am resurrecting this from the dead to see if any new information can be added. Sticking to the OP, has anyone ever had to deal with the NRA regarding a claim? Have you actually had a gun replaced? How easy/difficult was the process?

Any news, Viper?

I had a gun stolen and filed a claim - this was years ago - they paid it promptly upon submission of the police report - it was for a Ruger Security Six

That's good to hear! Thanks for posting that

The NRA promoted extra coverage insurance say from my policy:

Your stuff is insured in the USA, but can be extended for a world wide trip up to 10K worth of stuff. That might be the 2x5K rifle we hear about for safari.

Insured from any loss or damage from any cause except as noted. If it exceeds the amount known as ArmsCare(2.5k) or a $100 deductible if your membership in NRA expired.

Non covered events:
Bursting guns from bad stuff
Infidelity of trusted members you entrusted your stuff to
War, rebellion, invasion etc you see in all policies
Loss from Nuclear bombs, radiation and nuclear fire
Loss from union strikers
Loss from snow, rain or stuff if you left your stuff out in the open
No commercial gun dealer coverage
No coverage for illegal stuff
No coverage from a vehicle unless it happened from a LOCKED portion
No coverage for ammo, or scopes not attached etc
No coverage from mold, mildew, vermin, wear, tear, crap etc...

Valuation :
Replacement cost or Actual cash Value based on criteria in contract

I personally feel this is a good deal, and in no place is any condition I can see in my contract that you prove a receipt for old guns that you obviously don't have one for. You simply need to prove you had them at one point.

Photos, model numbers, and serial numbers in spreadsheet would be your best way to make sure you prove what you lost IMHO.
